Rotonda is one of the more ancient and interesting buildings of Thessaloniki, built in the end of Roman times, at the end of the 3rd or beginning of the 4th century AD. It is also an important monument of that era worldwide. It is built with bricks and was part of the palace complex of Galerius (293-310 AD). Its original use is not clear, possibly was a mausoleum or a temple of eastern deities. In Byzantine times, emperor Theodossios (379-395 AD) was christened in Thessaloniki and turned the monument to a Christian church, making many architectural rearrangements. Rotonda was the cathedral church of Thessaloniki for more than 1100 years. The dome has a diameter of 24.5m. The monument was decorated internally with colourful marbles and wall mosaics, and a part of them survived, equally important with the ones of Ravenna. In 1590, during Turkish occupation, Rotonda was turned to Muslim mosque and a minaret was added. Today Rotonda is the official church of the University of Thessaloniki, being used for ceremonies, honoured at the name of Saint George. It is also a museum. Leave a Comment

From the Arch of Galerius a colonnaded street originally ran north for some 100m/110yd to the Rotunda, which is believed to have been built as a Pantheon or a mausoleum for Galerius (though he was not buried here) and is now known as St George's Church (Aghios Georgios). This circular structure with thick, inward-corbelled walls and an interior diameter of 24m/80ft, preserves the remains of fine mosaics in the dome and the vaulted recesses round the walls (one of which was later extended to form the choir of the church). The mosaic in the center of the dome is missing, but below it can be seen the figures of angels, and below these again architectural façades on a gold ground. On the west side of the building is a minaret, badly damaged but still standing - a relic of the time when the church was converted into a mosque (the Hortaci Suleiman Effendi Camii). The Rotunda is now open to the public as a museum (lapidarium). Directions: Named also as Aghios Georgios church

A circular building erected in 306 A. D. as the Pantheon or Mausoleum of Galerius. Under Theodosius the Great it became a Christian church with only a few additions or alterations. Its mosaics are unique for the era (4th century). (Located on D. Gounari Street). At present there's... nothing interesting inside, except for the mosaics on the ceiling. Leave a Comment
