A few kilometres from the city centre, in the quarter called Zejtinlik (the Oil Market in Turkish), you'll find the Serbian cemetery from the WWI. 21,000 allies (the French, Italian and English), including 8,000 Serbs, were buried here.
The cemetery was built between 1933 and 1936, according to the plans of Aleksandar Vasic and Nikolai Krasnov.
You'll be greeted by old Djordje Mihajlovic, the keeper, who will take you on a short journey into the past and show you the nearby mausoleum with a chapel.
Well this is not definaltely MUST SEE for all of you , but it is for me ...this is the grave of my grand grand father in Thessaloniki. His name was Jevrem Jankovic.
When i went to look for his grave I had no clue where it was ... But guided with some weird force ... I have found him among 8 000 same shaped crosses... I just went there and there it was. The old man who works there, showed up later ... he couldnt believe how we found it , without the lists and maps of the graveyard....
I had to visit my great grandfather's grave.
Private Jevrem Jankovic (redov Jevrem Jankovic) is one of hundreds of thousands of soldiers died for their King and Fatherland, for their wifes and children and the future of all those who didn't join the fight for liberation of their own lands from the rule of Austrian-Hungarian emperor.
Serbian Royal Army retreated from Serbia (over Albania which caused the death of 120. 000 soldiers who were killed or died along the way) and after swift revival that same army led the way to the Breach of Thessaloniki Front (Solunski Front).
"1918 godina je slavna i tuzna godina za Srbe.
Od svih zivih muskaraca 1914. polovina ih nije docekala 1918.
Zato mi nemamo mnogo valjanog razloga da slavimo pobedu, jer ona pripada mrtvima."
