The best way to going around in the city of Thessaloniki is WALKING! because you get the very best of the paths... however, for those who are lazy to walk or at the time is too much for the day...
the second best way is a motorcycle! is easy to park everywhere and handy for the traffic. Thessaloniki has too many cars and too many streets only one way so really bad for circulation around the city!
However, is nice and weird at the same time the use that salonica people give to the taxis, because everybody can stop and jump inside a taxi that has been already taken for other people. If there is space and you want to share the proce with others, is also another way to meet people ;-)))
try it, you will enjoy it!
Taxis are waiting already for passengers that coming with Swiss,CSA or Malev around this time and are all a mix from all comapnies that operating in the city. Moreover to ''date'' with a taxi will cost u more.I cant be accurate on the price but i payed around 15 Euros for a distance of 15 km,inside the operational territory,in the same time of arrival as yours.Plagia belonging to another region, around 35 km? or more,in a highway route, with night price..I would suggest u to take a taxi to the Chalkidiki's bus station and take the first bus from there..u ll save lots of money although u ll loose one night of sleep..up to u!:)
Like every Greek city, in Thessaloniki there are really many taxis. People use them a lot, as they're cheap. Most of them are quite new and air conditioned, which is really important during the summer months. Many drivers drive like crazy, driving fast when on a highway or getting on bus lanes when they're in city center. Many of them use their cell phones while driving or listen loudly to radio.
Man can get a taxi from a special taxi stop on central streets or just by waiving to the driver everywhere. When you're inside a taxi, the driver may stop and get a second (or even third passenger) who's going to a place near yours, which can be really annoying, as many times you'll need more time than getting a public bus.
Most routes in city center cost less than 4 euros and a route from the airport to the city center can cost about 15 euros.
Personally, I don't like using taxis for the reasons mentioned above. But it can really be helpful when going out at night. or when you have to go to the airport or rail or bus stations. For more convinience, man can call for a taxi (it costs only 2 euros more) or arrange an appointment for next hours or next days, which can be helpful if someone goes to the airport or to rail or bus stations.
Radio Taxi Lefkos Pyrgos (White Tower): 2310 246104
Macedonia: 2310 550 400
Euro Taxi: 2310 866 866
Mercedes: 2310 525 000
Need to reach the city? Don't have much in your pocket, but do not feel like taking a bus for around one euro one-way? OK..... so you're standing in the line to take a taxi! It moves fast! Finally, it's "your" turn! Your taxi arrives. You ask the driver the oldest question in the world: "HOW MUCH?" and your driver, in response..... IGNORES IT, at the same time pushing you into the cab! Like if he did not understand what you had asked him! What I would recommend in such a bully situation is to move back and offer this taxi cab to next people in line. And wait for the next one.
C'mon! Thessaloniki has over one million people! Some taxi drivers must understand "how much?"! Good luck!
