The mausoleum of Osman Sah

the mausoleum

Osman Sah was the turkish benefactor who sponsored the building of the mosque that bears his name, therefore his mausoleum was built right behind it. It's quite small in size, but a very interesting monument as not too many have been preserved in Greece.

I don't know if I am spelling the name correctly in English (feel free to let me know how it's spelled). In any case, this is the best preserved mosque in Greece, and the first one to be found North of Athens. It is attributed to Sinan (1490-1588) [again, please excuse any misspelling- I read about this stuff in greek you know] the great turkish architect who marked his era with more than 360 monuments. Nowadays, it's empty and not used for anything, but the local authorities have expressed the will to use it for cultural events. It's a very good example of the typical mosque in Greece during the ottoman ocupation: one central square room, with a patio covered by 3-5 small domes (in this case 5). Right behind it is the mausoleum of Osman Sah, the benefactor who built it.
