Favorite thing: This word means "old castle". Kohilou castle was built on the top of that hill (600 m high) between 1207-1233. It was the most powerful mediaeval town of the island.
It is also the place where an old woman fell to the sea (see the tip "To pidima tis grias" on the travelolgue). The view of the Aegean Sea from there is extraordinary.

Favorite thing: It is the biggest monastery, 8 km south of Gavrio. It was built in the 14th century and has a glorious past. In old times more than 100 monks were living there.
Nowadays, only a few nuns take care of the treasures of the monastery, as its rich library, old hand-written texts, precious icons...

Healthy water

Favorite thing: Despite located in Cyclades, Andros is -somehow- a green island, with rivers and a variety of flora. Apoikia is such a traditional village (300 inh.), famous for its own springs (Sariza). There is a factory which produces this healthy mineral water, maybe the best of its kind in Greece.

AndyRG 1102 reviews

Favorite thing: It is near the green village of Stenies. The tower was built in the 17th century, a good example of embattled place of abode. You can also go to the nearby Leodo's bridge and admire the beauty of the river among the trees...

Favorite thing: It is located at an altitude of 230 m, the view to the capital and the sea is perfect. The monastery was first built in 961 by the Byzantine emperor Nikiforos Fokas. There are also enough treasures inside it, today only 2-3 monks live there.

What a house!

Favorite thing: There are only a few such "houses" in Andros, most of them are in the nearby island Tinos, a little bit more south (Tinos has about 1.300 fine-cut lofts of pigeons!). They have two floors: the first is used as a store room, the higher houses the pigeons.

Favorite thing: Lighthouses always look very attractive to my eyes, they are both interesting buildings architecturally and... shelters. This lighthouse is NE of the island, not the biggest one.
