Favorite thing: Many of the tourists get trapped in the night life of the island and miss the experience of waking up early in the morning to see the sun rising -nearly emerging from the sea. The capital of the island, 'Fira', is so narrow that you can watch the sea from both eastern and western side without much moving around. This is also the time when the habitants can be seen on the streets not having to hide from the caravans of tourists.

Favorite thing: Perched on the edge of a 260 metres high cliff, FIRA is the capital and most important village on the island of Santorini. Fabulous panoramic views of the caldera and the submerged volcano can be seen from most locations in Fira.
Plateia Theotokopoulou is the main square. The narrow streets are filled with all kinds of shops, jewellery stores, cafe's, restaurants, bars and night clubs.
Fira is a typical Cycladic village filled with charming white-washed houses and blue-domed churches.
Hans and I, as well as the many VTers who "invaded" Fira, absolutely loved it here and is perhaps one of the most beautiful spots to have a VT meet. Kudos to the organizers - Galatea and Janet - for making this an unforgettable experience.

Favorite thing: The Greek Cathedral MITROPOLI in Fira, Santorini, was built for the arrival of King Otto in 1842. The weekend that we were in Santorini there was a lovely wedding going on at Mitropoli. The square in front of the Cathedral was teeming with the bride and groom and their guests and also with VT members as this square was the meeting place for our get-togethers. It was also right near our Hotel Kavalari.

Favorite thing: The town of Fira is a lovely place set precariously on the rim of the cliff or crater, ca. 200m up. 587 steps zigzag from the port of Skala up the cliff to Fira. The town has the best restaurants and shops on the island. However, most of the car ferries dock in Athinios 7km west of Fira. Buses and taxis connect the two places.

Favorite thing: If you choose to go to Santorini by ferry from Athens the island starts capturing you even before your arrival.Red vertical rocks suddenly appear as the ship takes a turn to catch to the port Athinios. Then you see something like a white-lemon building curved in the rock (photo) and you realize it is beginning...

Favorite thing: Tour the whole island visit the wineries, see all the different beaches, go to Fira at night and watch the sunset in Oia. Don't be intimidated by the roads in Santorini and if you want to be adventurous rent a scooter. Be sure to hike to the top of Ancient Thira to see the views.

Favorite thing: The main beaches on Santorini are Perissa (15 km SE of Fira) and Kamari (10km SE of Fira). Both are served by buses. Monolithos (7km E of Fira) is less crowded.
