Friendly Greek Taverna: Refreshing Service

Outdoor seating area

Whether its a few beers with friends or a meal, this is the place to come for all the right reasons. Set back away from the Caldera edge, your pocket will appreciate the fact that you are not paying hyped-up prices just for the priviledge of sitting at a table with a caldera view. However, the outdoor seating area is also protected (by being lower than the surrounding road) from the island's meltemi winds which can make some places a little chilly once the sun has set (quite often those same places that charged you extra for the great sunset view over the caldera).

The staff are friendly and obliging; a group of VT-ers arrived at almost midnight and the staff had just closed the restaurant but were happy to re-open due to the size of our group and the fact that we had already spent the previous night there as well!!! Jimmy (or at least I think that was his name) was like a whirlwind serving beers and opening them, all in one fluid motion!

Favorite Dish: We had all sorts of great dishes here, from appetisers to full meals, but my personal favourite was a chicken stuffed aubergine bake thingy - I'm sure Jimmy would be able to point it out on the menu. It was delicious!

The Blue Note: What a view!

The Blue Note and Skaros

Imerovigli village is just a kilometre uphill from the capital of Santorini, Fira. The Blue Note restaurant has incredible views of the islands with the rock of Skaros directly below. The restaurant is owned by the Spiliotica Villa company and is a part of an apartment complex which consists of 20 apartments and 5 suites.

Favorite Dish: Anything local. Try the swordfish. International dishes are also served.

The village of Oia.

Stani is a traditional Greek tavern, family operated, serving excellent food of the Mediterranean art. Greek cuisine at its best.

Favorite Dish: Grilled kalamari, grilled shrimps, moussaka. Local wine. Fresh bread, tzatziki sauce.

NR. ONE: FAST FOOD & CAFE'

Nr. One Fast Food & Cafe'

There's always a place to find fast food and Fira's NR. ONE was our favourite. They had different combination plates ranging from 4 to 7 euros. Hot dogs were the cheapest and you got a hot dog, french fries and a bottle of soda for 4 Euros. They also had hamburgs and sausages.
The real fun part was eating on their terrace and watching all the action on the busy street. Usually we saw a VT'er or two having a bite to eat or just walking around.

Cafe del Mar e Sol: Great Caldera Views

Entrance

The one thing that is guaranteed to put up the cost of any meal in Fira is that the restaurant has a caldera view. However, its worth paying the extra at least once during your stay on the island of Santorini (Thira) and this Cafe is certainly a good place to enjoy the wonderful views that your extra couple of Euros will buy you.

The Cafe itself has a very laid-back atmosphere and seating is very informal.

Service is excellent. I came here for breakfast and needed to be back out quickly to meet up with fellow VT-ers heading out on a caldera cruise. I mentioned this to the waiter and he ensured that my meal was served as quickly as possible but didn't make me feel rushed either.

Favorite Dish: I had a great omelette but the Cafe has quite a varied breakfast menu which includes options to suit just about every palette! And, whilst the food is pleasing on the taste buds, the view will be very pleasing on the eyes!

Gyros: Just at the fork in the road.....

Gyros!!!!!!
1 more image

After a week in Greece Mark and I realized we had not had any gyros yet! What kind of tourists are we? So we decided to remedy the situation one afternoon while walking the streets of Fira. Walking up the main street in the village to where the street forks into two sections we found this little gyro stand right in the intersection. We stopped, smelled the air for aroma of roasting chicken, lamb, and port and decided this was the place. We were not disappointed. They gyros were everything you would expect them to be. The sauce was excellent. The price was great. Now we could say our Greek trip was complete!

Socrates View Taverna

Its difficult to write a bad review about Socrates View Taverna, even if you received food you did not enjoy at first. The restaurant was recommended to us by the waiter at Lithos Restaurant. So we thought we would give it a try. We placed our orders and were served politely by the waiter. I had a wonderful beef dish which I really enjoyed. Mark decided to try a lamb dish. The flavor of the lamb dish was really not to Mark's liking at all, and to be honest, Mark is not difficult to please when it comes to Greek food. Being polite he really did not want to say anything. The waiter had been very helpful and courteous, but it was obvious we were not having a great experience. When the waiter realized Mark had an issue, he immediately came to to the table and apoligized. He insisted he would return the meal and give Mark any other meal of his choice at no extra charge. Mark went with a chicken dish this time and it was excellent. The waiter once again apoloized for the first dish and offered us complimentary ouzo for our trouble. ]

Sometimes second choice pay off. And in this case it turned a so-so experience into an excellent one.

Lithos Restaurant: Sunsets at Lithos

Lithos Restaurant

With dramatic views of the caldera and magnificant sunsets in the background, Lithos Restaurant is a great choice for your evening meal. The food is cooked to perfection. Although prices on the caldera are usually higher than other places in Fira, we found the prices at Lithos Restaurant to be reasonable. We met the owner who was very friendly and helpful with tips for us about things to do and see in Fira.

Fanes, our host at our hotel, highly recommended Lithos Restaurant. We were glad we took his advice.

We noticed that most of the restaurants had their own private labeled wines. The wine at Lithos was excellent.

China Restaurant: Why Chinese in Greece?
jancola profile photo
jancola 58 reviews

I don't know why, but I really enjoy eating "Chinese" food in foreign countries. That's in quotes, because Chinese food in America doesn't usually resemble actual food served in China, right? The same is true in Greece - the Chinese food there is informed by local tastes. So in a way, you are learning about the culture by learning about what kind of Chinese food they like.

Anyway, this restaurant was a fun break from Greek food. The host was very friendly, and the food was good. How is it different from American Chinese? I don't know, it was actually pretty similar. :)

Sant Mythos: Nice little crepe place
jancola profile photo
jancola 58 reviews

We hit this place first because we were so hungry and it was the first place we found, but it really was quite nice. I had three crepes here over the course of the two days we were here, and they were all very good. The proprietor was very nice, and he recognized us instantly the second time we came by. There were several other weary tourists here, and this place could not have been more pleasant or accomodating.

Favorite Dish: Savory crepes. They make a great lunch.
