As Fira is built on a cliff, the only way up the cliff besides the funicular are steps - MANY steps. I must say, I have not climbed so many steps in all my life. Steps (44) down to our Hotel room - Steps down to the Fira Harbour - In town - Steps!!! And if you are not careful, you can easily loose your footing as the steps are on an angle for rain run-off and they're usually uneven and stony, not smoothe. I watched in awe as the sure-footed donkeys made their way down the steps, laden with supplies for the hotels and restaurants.
Ummm! Maybe if I had an extra pair of legs, it might be easier! hehe!

Oh, the Plumbing

The Greek islands are fabulous places, but the plumbing... not so much. Get friendly with your toilet paper, because you won't be flushing it down the toilet here -- you'll be keeping it in a lidded trash can next to the toilet.

Pick up some bottled water when you pass by the supermarket. The tap water here is very salty and not suitable for drinking.

And don't be surprised if your shower is right in your bathroom next to your toilet, so that everything gets wet -- this seems to be the way things are arranged. Get used to low pressure shower heads, too... I guess the salt water doesn't go through the shower head too well!

Ah well, you can't have everything, right?

Kamara beach.

The dark volcanic sand on the beaches can get blazing hot in the sun so take precautions. Bring sandals, thick towels to sit or lie on etc.
