    Panagia Portiani on August 15th

Almost every week there is a festival somewhere in Milos. Most are religious "panigyria" (singular = panigyri; pron. pan-ee-YEER-ee) in honor of the patron saint of a given church. Typically, a panigyri involves a religious ceremony that includes a parade of the saint's icon around the vicinity of the church, followed by traditional live music and dancing as well as a large-scale cookout. A flea market also takes place in the church yard.

Visitors of Milos in August will have the opportunity to attend the festivities of one of several churches in honor of the Virgin Mary on August 15th, the date of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, or Dormition of the Theotokos (the God-bearer) according to the Greek Orthodox faith.

Arguably the best such festivities take place at the church of Panagia Portiani (Virgin Mary of the Gate) in the village of Zefyria, both the evening before (August 14th) and on the actual day of the Dormition, August 15th.

    Kissing underwater

Milos is the island of Lovers. It comes as no surprise, then, that the thousands of young lovers who visit Milos every year would express their affection for one another at every opportunity - even underwater!

Captain Nikolas Xenakis of the catamaran sailboat "Chrysovalandou" makes it a point to snap dozens of pics of his guests during the daily cruises in the summer months. A good chunk of those pics are taken underwater, in the emerald waters of the remote beaches of Milos.
