There are numerous airlines going to Mykonos if you're not travelling on a "package holiday". Of course, there are all kinds of options if you've gone to a travel agent and booked a trip which includes your air and hotel, because then you're most likely to end up on a charter airline. But if you plan to get their on your own steam by air, here are some possibilities:

We went with German Wings from Cologne, Germany. German Wings has some great deals at good prices, and they fly to Mykonos from Cologne and also Berlin. Check out their website, www.germanwings.com

There are also about 5 flights per day between Mykonos and Athens with Olympic Airlines (www.olympicairlines.com), which run close to 100 Euros. The flight lasts 40 minutes. They also fly every day to Rhodes, a two hour flight, for about 90 Euros.

Aegean Airlines flies daily to not only Athens but also to Thessaloniki. Thessaloniki is a cool place and you can get there cheaply from Central Europe using Sky Europe. Websites are www.aegeanair.com and www.skyeurope.com).

To get to Crete, Santorini, or Rhodes, you can also go with Sky Express, www.skyexpress.gr

Lastly another great option is Air Berlin, that flies to Mykonos from Vienna, Nuremberg, Leipzig, Berlin, Hamburg, Hanover, and Duesseldorf. Website: www.airberlin.com

Mykonos airport (JMK) is served by regular daily flights from Athens by both Olympic and Agean Airlines, but also worth considering, especially during the summer, is direct charter flights from many European cities including Moscow and even from Tel Aviv. Finding a direct flight will depend on doing your own research from where you wish to fly but for an overview the site below has some (slightly out of date) information on the various airlines with direct services.

The airport at Mykonos is about 4km (10 mins) from Chora and has good bus links, hotel transfers or taxis.

Most people go to Mykonos by air on a package deal. Flights from northern Europe land just south of the Chora. The Package Flights are Mykonos' lifeblood. Its lifeline is the Cycladic ferries, though. Direct connections are available from Pireaus.

It's easy to get to some of the nieghboring islands by speed boat or catamaran.
    Mykonos-Tinos, 15 minutes, 8 Euros
    Mykonos - Rafina, 2 hours, 32 Euros
    Mykonos - Piraeus, 3 hours, 40 Euros (3 daily)
    Mykonos - Syros, 30 minutes, 12 Euros
Mykonos -Paros, 1 hour, 15 Euros. From Paros there are connecting services to Naxos, Santorini, and Crete.

There are also many ferries, but be sure you know that there are two ferry terminals on Mykonos. The "new quay" is about 2 km north of Mykonos town and mostly bigger fast feries dock here. The other ferry terminal is the Town Quay at Tourlos. Be sure you go to the right dock for your ferry--it says on your tickets!

By ferry to Santorini it takes about 6 hours and is only about 15 Euros. They don;t run every day so always be sure to check the current schedule. There are other ferries to Samos (5 hours) and even Thessaloniki (12 hours). The seas can be rough sometimes!

Mykonos has regular ferry and hydrofoil connections with the other islands in the Cyclades as well as with Piraeus.

As with other Greek islands, the general rule is that hydrofoils are twice as quick and twice as expensive as ferries. Timetables change frequently and I would advise you to check www.ferries.gr for up-to-date information. On the island itself, you can see up-to-date timetables displayed on boards outside the numerous travel agencies selling tickets.

I first visited Mykonos as a daytrip (which also included a visit to the uninhabited neighbouring island of Delos) from Paros in September 2005. The crossing from Naoussa in Paros to Mykonos is around 30 minutes by hydrofoil and an hour by ferry.

More recently, I visited Mykonos briefly during a Greek island hopping trip in May 2006. The following information was correct as of that date:

    - I arrived at Mykonos on the Blue Star Ithaka ferry from Syros (via a short stop at Tinos). The journey time was 1 hour and 30 minutes and the ticket cost me 7.30 Euros.

    - I left Mykonos on a Superjet hydrofoil to Naxos. After Naxos, the hydrofoil was continuing eastwards and southwards to Ios, Santorini and finally Heraklion on Crete. The journey from Mykonos to Naxos was just 45 minutes and the ticket cost me 15.70 Euros.

  • the first option to get the island from Greece first port,Pireus,is the company of Hellenic Seaways. They have 2 kind of ships.
The "slow" as we call them, ships, that pass through lot of other islands and get to Mykonos after 5-7 hours depenting the route.Iis more low budget so if you dont really care about a few more hours,is fine.
The Highspeeds are hidrofloids that usually make Syros-Tinos-Mykonos and get you to the island, after 4 hours. The point is,since there are newer ships, you have numbered seat,so nothing to worry about where to seat. Also they are more luxurius with 3 different classes, normal, first and vip. Vip is on the top floor and has leather seats, ofcourse quite bigger, playstations and prive bar.
Prices are from 30-35 euros economy, till 80-90 vip, if i remember well...

  • Rafina is the second port of Athens. It is 30km NE of city center and has easy access from airport.(less that 20min.)
You can either use a "normal" ship,or a catamaran type.
Bluestarferries use the normals and the duration is about 4 hours. They also have catamarans which make the incredible 2 hours! Imagine that the very first row of seats, must use a seatbelt!!!
HellenicSeaways also use catamaran type ships and they get to Mykonos in 2,5 hours.
Rafina is my preference cos takes you less time in the sea and usually is less crowded.
First option to those who travel right after flight to Athens int.airport, cos it's very close to it.

The ferry arriving from Athens/Piraeus arrives at a terminal a few kms from the main centre of Mykonos - I shared a taxi and cost me only 5 euro but those waiting for ferries in the queue behind me wouldve had a bit of a wait and quite a walk - reckon it would take about half an hour.

The fast boats and cats that leave for the nearby islands and the one I took to get to Santorini was only about 8 to 10 mins walk from the main centre.

The left luggage office, which is at the main ferries ticket office, is only a few minutes from this terminal but about 10 mins from the main centre. doesnt open until 8 or 9 am so arriving off the first boat from Piraeus just before 6 am I had to find somewhere in the main centre - kindly a cafe owner let me leave my case there for a couple of hours while I did some early morning walking to see the sights until the baggage storage place opened and before the boats to Delos started their trips. and then take my case from the main centre to the baggage storage and then walk back to the main centre and the jetty where the boats to Delos depart from.
