Located next to the port it was hard for me to miss this museum. Not busy at all (most people come to Mykonos for party anyway) it was very interesting to stroll around this small museum. The staff is friendly and helpful if you have any questions about the exhibits.
It is housed in a building that was built in 1902 to house some archeological artifacts that were found in Rhenia area in 1898. In our days you can see items that were found in Mykonos, Delos and Rhenia. The building of the museum renovated in 1935 and 1970 in Cycladic style to fit with the rest of the town.
Its collection is spared on 6 rooms including a large amount of vessels from early geometric period (1050BC) to 700BC, with typical cycladic pottery. There are also other ceramics, sculptures, jewelry from 2nd century BC and funeral reliefs from hellenistic period (pic 3).
The most famous item here is the large Pithos of Mykonos (pic 5) that dates back from 7th century BC with extensive relief scenes from Trojan War.
The entrance fee is 2euros only so you may want to take a look on your way back to the ferry.
It is open Tuesday to Sunday 8.30-15.00
