Pelicans: The pelican of Mykonos

The star of Mykonos, Petros has been the island’s mascot for some time. He was one the pelicans in the flock which flew to Mykonos from the mainland back in the 1950s. After a storm, the pelican gave up migrating to become a local resident.

He became so popular after his death, when a successor had to be found to replace him. Today, another pelican can still be found at the waterfront of Chora. He has a girlfriend and they walk together along the waterfront all day. When they stop, crowds gather to take pictures. People like to pet and feed him and he is so nice to allow them all to enjoy spoiling him.

    Pelicans: The Mascot of Mykonos
  • Tip Rating:
  • Pelicans hang around freely on Mykonos, however this one was my new friend! Petros hung out at one of the cafes we ate at towards the end of the night. He lets most people pet him, although I admit I was afraid to try. He followed the restaurant owner around like a lost puppy; especially when they had fish for him. Everyone was entertained by this little guy!

    Pelicans: Petros the Pelican...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ok, here we are, Petros is the legendary pelican of Mykonos! The first one has died many years before but the locals always bring another one to replace every time and for some strange reason they call it Petros again! At my last visit (last April) I saw 4 of them! Don’t worry where to find the pelican, Petros strolls day and night around the alleys of Chora.

  • There are some pelicans living in Mykonos. They are the most special citizens!!!
You will have more chances of finding them walking, swimming or sleeping (they don't usually go out during the night but they usually sleep siesta!!) around the port.

    Pelicans: Pink Pelicans
I am told that "Petros"; the town mascot is in bird heaven now. However, the pelicans are still very popular in town. This pelican was even once standing on one foot and posted for pictures.

Marching along the sea front of Mykonos are two pelicans with clipped wings. They feed of what the fisherman and tourist give them and have over the years become a regular sight.

    Pelicans: Petro’s the Pelican
When stepping off the ship at the port, walk along the waterfront. Here, you may see the town’s mascot Petro’s the Pelican. Petros was left behind when a group of migrating birds passed the island in the 1950’s. The bird was too exhausted to fly with his friends. Fisherman found him and nursed him back to health. The original Petros has passed but the locals keep replacing him with different pelicans to continue the story. The current version is a very large bird. I watched him from a distance.
