    Hora

    by call_me_rhia Updated Sep 8, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Hora is the main town of the island of Mykonos and - though apparently nice, it is far too touristy to have real fascination. It's a maze of little lanes with white-washed houses and bougainvilles, and the occasional old picturesque church... BUT... with every single building having been turned intoa shop/bar/disco/restaurant ect, it really lacks both authenticity and charm.

    Mykonos Blues

by Confucius Updated Jul 22, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: This is one of my favorite photos and it's just a tourist gift shop in Mykonos. What makes it special in my opinion is the splendid choice of blue paintings decorating the outside of the shop. If blue is your favorite color then you can't help admiring the way this scene catches your eye immediately after walking past countless white buildings.
This hue of blue is remarkably similar to the shade of blue that is used to paint the domes of churches on Greek islands. I like how the blues of the sea and sky are a near match, and so when all of these paintings are placed together it resembles an Aegean daydream which comes to life just a hundred meters away from where this photo was taken.

Fondest memory: Window shoppers will notice the reproductions of Greek antiquities framed by the paintings.
In what became a common theme throughout my tour of Greece, I chose to photograph these souvenirs in place of purchasing them.

You should do this view of blue hue at Mykonos OK, here's what the shop looks like before zooming

    Mykonos Memories

by Confucius Updated Jul 22, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: What are your endearing images of Mykonos without the windmills and pelicans? Is it the white buildings and blue paint? The reproductions of Greek antiquities in shop windows or the bust of a local hero overlooking the Aegean Sea? (See photo #2)
Maybe it's the beaches or a trendy restaurant right on the bay?
For me, Mykonos will always be the windmills and pelican as well as the Chinese restaurant with the wonderful sunset view. I just can't separate these icons from the island. Without them, Mykonos would just be another barren Greek island with nothing but nightlife to attract summer visitors.

Fondest memory: I knew I should have made this a travelogue instead. Oh well, here's a tip for the town of Mykonos.
Follow the Australian tour guide. I overheard his commentary and thought he did a great job of bringing the town to life. He knows the history of the island and is friends with lots of locals.
So if you hear his narration, sneak into the group and you'll be rewarded with great stories.
One of the local shopowners even came out with a basket of candy and gave everybody in the group, (including those lucky ones pretending to be part of the tour) free sweets.

One more interesting note about shops in Mykonos: the tattoo parlor "As I Am" is where several celebrities, including David Beckham, got their tattoos. (I didn't get one, in case you are wondering.)

The colors of Greece's flag are blue and white This big bust overlooks the bay; a Mykonos hero! The Aegean and a sea of white buildings in Mykonos This section of town is called Sunset on Mykonos is best seen from the hilltop

    Beaches of Mykonos

by sandysmith Written Aug 12, 2010

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: There are many beaches to enjoy on Mykonos - some are more accessible than others. Some are off the beaten track but work exploring - like Panormos. Most charge for sunbeds and parasols for the day but others like Ornos and Plati Yialos are free if you are kind enough to use the services of the beach taverna asociated with the sunbeds - this is great if you only wish to stay for a few hours or a whole day.
