This beach at the background was just 5’ walk from Merihas. It was very peaceful, we enjoyed our swim some really hot days. Actually, most of the times we had the beach for our own :) We also ate some tasteful figs from the trees there! lol
There are more than 70 beaches over the island, some of them are not reachable by car.
Very close to Dryopida village is the Katafiki cave, a small but nice cave with stalagmites etc The entrance was for free in 2004 but they told me that they will charge a small price the year after. The light inside was very poor for protections so the quality of the photos isn’t good, that’s why I put only this one before the exit!
Dryopida is a small but picturesque village with 500 inhabitants. It’s easily accessible by bus. Have your time here because it is nice to stroll around and relax in a local cafe, we had some cold beers here, an incredible greek salad and some interesting conversations with some local old men. The roofs of the houses here are slanted and tiled.
This is a small but beautiful small village up on a hill. The locals call it Hora but the official name is Messaria with 600 inhabitants. You can drive here by a car but there’s a bus connection with Meriha.
Walk around the small cobblestone alleys and wash down the heat in a small local café (or cafenion as the local call it). The houses are paint in white (typical in Cyclades islands) but the difference here is that the roofs are red! There are many orthodox churches to see and some traditional windmills.
With 250 inhabitants its very strange to see how busy becomes during summer. Almost every local here works for the tourists but they have their houses in a village. Merihas is the port and the basic starting point for everywhere.
I used Merihas as a base for exploring the rest of the island. You will easily find many rooms to rent (make a call during August though). There is a good variety of restaurants, some cafes near the sea, and also some shops. You can also easily walk to some nice beaches here if you are bored to go further inside the island.
