HOW TO TELL IF THIS IS A CHEAP PLACE TO DRINK

by DAO Updated Sep 26, 2010

    CHEAP !
    4 more images

Just too many places in Santorini are overpriced places to drink. If you are willing to walk small distances of about 50 meters, I can save you up to 50% on your night out! Cheap places to drink have the following qualities:

    • Non-Caldera view
    • Large bottles (500ml) of beer and/or draft
    • Are 50-100 meters away from the main square
    • Tend to be Tavernas with outdoor seating
    • Serve food
    • Are genuinely glad to see you
    • Serve Mythos – the local beer - and its good!
    • Have Mythos on draft
    • Serve Ouzo in glasses that do not look like works of art

So if you are looking at a great view and have been served a 330ml bottle of warm beer for 5-6 Euros by bored/angry looking bar staff – you are paying too much!!!

Dress Code: If they care how you are dressed - you are paying too much!

MURPHY'S BAR: A Popular Bar in Santorini but expensive!

by greekcypriot Updated Aug 17, 2010

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Murphy's Bar

Murphy's Bar in Fira is popular on the island of Santorini. Established in 1999, is supposed to be one of the best night life bars on the island.

I don't recommend it to anyone on a budget.
If you are well off and you really want to enjoy a night out try it.

It is an Irish pub, it offers a variety of drinks and (Murphy's beer the original Irish stout).
Greek beers cost a bit cheaper here, however have in mind that it is not a cheap place to be.

    Tropical path

The Tropical Bar is a place where the cool people of a wide range of styles and ages joints every night. The bartender Nikola is the soul of the place, kind, pleasant and hyperactive moves the night ahead. Of course, with the invaluable help of girls and guys trying to make feel better each person taking his drinks orders. The balcony looks face to face to the volcano caldera perched 250 meters over the sea level, and when the full moon brights on the dark waves of the sea... well, drinks, good friends and great music. Say no more.

THIS PLACE LOVES VT! Also known locally as Koutouki, it offers a large outdoor dinning area that is set below the road so it’s still nice on windy nights. It’s cheaper than a lot of others and has great food and the best waiter in Greece. I thought his name was ‘Para-kalow’ which actually means ‘Please’. You say it and he appears! Great big beers at good prices and always cold. Music loud, soft or off? Just ask! It is only 100 meters up the hill (North) of the main intersection in Fira on the side of the main road. Good for a romantic dinner or a blow-out VT drinking session! Tell them DAO sent you!

** VT TESTED AND APPROVED! **

    UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2010:
Sadly this great restaurant has now closed. There are plenty of places charging huge fortunes for a beer still open.

the two brothers bar is a small bar in the center of thira where we went one night and had a great time.
the place has DJ and a dance floor and provided us with just what we needed.

Dress Code: wear whatever you want to wear as this place is really just a regular bar that happens to have a DJ and a dance floor.

Casablanca Soul: Oh well...Is Casablanca Soul

    one of the giggs

Casablanca has been the top, most controversy and unique bar in Santorini. It reopened in July 2005 and within a few working days it has become the coolest place to be (again) in downtown Fira. This is because people got tired of having to deal with the everynight low quality consumption of altered booze in big clubs and music standards that have remained back in the eighties (meaning mainstream-pop-greek mix, with the same song lists everynight). The place within 200 working days has redetermined the nightlife of Santorini and this can be seen from the list of DJ's and live happenings that took place within those two summer periods. Plays soul, house, jazz and beat tunes for easy listeners and soulful audiences and goes louder while the night progresses . Is a great cocktail place, with nice, neat working youths. Prices from 5 euros for beers to 8 euros for cocktails. Entrance fee in summer time at 10 euros (includes a drink). I have spotted the best dj of France playing there last year without anybody notifying about it (these people do it for their friends or something....) and Osunlade for few nights. Is almost like a private kind of bar, with most people knowing exactly why they are heading there. (Good booze, good music)

    Oia main church

As night falls the children, women and grandparents gather at the main church plaza in Oia centre, Here the kids play and run and the oler ones talk. I assume the men are at the ouzo watering hole???
Very pleasant atmosphere, a beautiful church and a good place to sit town after a busy and hot sightseeing day.

TROPICAL BAR - FIRA: GREAT VIEW - BAD PRICES

by DAO Updated Sep 26, 2010

Tropical bar has some of the best views of the Caldera in Fira. It is also stupidly expensive. They only serve imported beers in small (330ml) bottles at 6 Euros a go. My advice? Get drunk first and then go there for like 1 beer. It is a great place to sit and watch the sunset and the moon over the water, but you pay a fortune. If you do get drunk, do not become completely incoherent as the guy in the pictures who was drooling all over himself. Before you ask, no he is not a member of VT. We did not invite him to be one either. He would not have remembered what we said anyway. By the way, when I started taking pictures of him, so did every other tourist in the bar. Fair play.

BTW, Please don't drink here. Overpriced, tiny, bad service and no atmosphere do not deserve to be rewarded.

Dress Code: Bright unatractive shirts are best.

    Santorini Mou: Bouzouki!

by ncoutroulis Written Oct 17, 2003

    outside

On the outskirts of Oia, you'll find Santorini Mou. It's a taverna that has live bouzouki players. I didn't eat here, but the music was really nice, especially since live music is not permitted in the town of Oia itself. Its's a really laid back place, where you can sit and have some drinks outside, and listen to some great music.

OUTSIDE OF THE BAR: DANCING IN THE STREETS !

So there you are dancing the funky monkey or the headless chicken in a small warm bar full of drunks like you. You are sweating more than you did at the beach today! Take it outside! Good bars have LOUD music and you can dance just outside the door. Just look at Giampiero6 leading the way! Just as much fun and a lot cooler. Do not forget to take your beer with you!

Koo Club: A REALLY Touristy Nightclub

    by Jmill42 Written Mar 4, 2004

Picture of inside, borrowed from website

Whats billed as a great nightspot that occasionally attracts celebrities and all the "in" crowd of Greece, turned out to be a normal tourist club. Sure there were locals there, but they were just Greek men trying their luck at the foriegners. Overall, the music was at least better than average, but the atmosphere sucked. I would give it a pass, unless you are with a group of friends that will distract you from the suckiness.

    Dress Code: Normal, nothing dressy.

If you love to dance, check this place out after midnight. My friend and I stayed in Santorini for an entire week so we became regulars here. The music was great, the staff - incredibly friendly, the sangria - out of this world. Eventually, someone ends up dancing on the bar, don't worry, it's encouraged!

    Dress Code: anything goes.

    Nightlife in Santorini island

by Aggeliki Written May 2, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Santorini is full of bars, clubs, and nightclubs. You can start the evening with a coffee or a drink at a cafe or bar overlooking the Caldera at sunset. Later in the night you can choose one of the bigger nightclubs located in the main night area or a smaller club with a more casual atmosphere. Santorini's nightlife is not cheap, so be prepared to pay between €8 to €15 for a drink.

In the summer period (April-October) the island itself becomes a hot spot about nightlife, there are many bars and clubs where you can enjoy the greek (or international, more?) nightlife...
"Enigma" club is the most famous one, in Fira, it is a "must"! Next to it, you can also have a good time in the "Coo" club...

    Find the cross...

You can guess how nice is to walk everywhere in Santorini during the day, so why not during the night? In such a way, you can see more people/spots and admire the lights from the houses and the bars, looking like candles in the dark... Churches, like that one, have a different look...
