Of course there are special hired visits to the most important wineries of the island. But one day, after a visit the Museum of Akrotiri, a young woman with a wagon and a donkey was selling very cheap home made white wine beside the museum main door. The bottles looks with no tags, no label, no nothing. Clean bottle with wine inside, thats all. Of course I bought two bottles of this quite muddy white wine. I opened one bottle in my rented house in Oia. Great experience. Sweet, strong and almost frozen, after the second glass I was extremely scared because a earthquake was shaking the whole island. Nice. Leave a Comment

The Egyptian and Roman ruins at the top of the mountain between Kamari and Pressia. It's a must see but be warned that the some may get scared do to the steep mountain road up to the ruins, I like the ride myself. Just make sure the driver had his morning coffee before the drive.

Mt.Profitis Ilias, with radar tower behind Ma by mapakettle, 1 more photos Ancient Thira sits on top of a huge barren rock outcropping which divides Kamari and Perissa, known as Cape Mesa Vouno. Immediately behind Ma (as shown in the picture), is the summit of Mt. Profitis Ilias, with the radar station tower quite evident. The entrance to Ancient Thira itself is located to the left of the photo, with a slight valley separating the two ridges. During the dates we were on Santorini, many parts of Ancient Thira were temporarily closed to the public, and even the tour guide providing bus runs from Kamari up the long switchback road recommended we not bother. The shuttle departures were greatly reduced, so long hours of waiting for a return ride could be expected. Walkable, but not for the Kettles in this heat. From what the guide told us, the site is more of an interest destination for the tourist, and not much of of an important archaeological site 'at this time'. Old building foundations are apparent, as is a poorly preserved theatre, and many very faint carvings of an erotic nature. Interesting for sure, but much remains to be excavated, and the site is an ongoing project. From the books we had read, it described the site much differently, and we had anticipated a ruins much like Pompeii. Disappointing, but certainly worth a gander upon our return next visit. Blue haze by Gwynneth Fira, the capital of Santorini clings to the edge of a cliff, which is, in fact, the rim of the crater!! You have a number of ways to get there either by riding the donkeys or mules, up the winding steps or, for a modern-day travel experience, climb aboard the cable car that first came into vogue about 20 years ago. Skaros is a town built on top of Fira. You'd tend to miss it because it's actually attached to Fira and I don't know where one starts and the other ends. What makes this interesting is that there is an old settlement and fort built on a rock formation next to Skora. The is a trail that allows you to walk to it and the ruins are fantastic. The views here are spectacular and it's worth the trip to go there. Leave a Comment

Maybe the cats have the right idea...find a little cubby-hole, curl up and take a nap! Too much walking up and down steps gets a VTer tired! So, don't forget, you are on vacation! Relaxing is OK! And if you have a friend, all the better! Leave a Comment

The Santorini Caldera by Gwynneth When the Santorini volcano exploded in the Mediterranean Sea, it left a massive 'caldera' nearly four miles wide!! Its walls uniquely rise up out of the sea and give the geologists and vulcanologists a great deal to study. The wind at the edge of the caldera (crater) is usually stronger, so most of the mills of the island are built there along with villages of Santorini and Therasia. Leave a Comment

Jeff & I rented a car and drove around the island for a day one of the nice spots we saw was on the Southernmost tip of Santorini where the Akorini lighthouse is situated. The lighthouse was built in 1892, stands 10 meters high and is perched on a rocky point covered with white sandstone . It's a nice place to walk with some nearbly caves and of course those amazing panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the distant Caldera to be explored. Leave a Comment

There are not really too many places to go off the beaten path on Santorini. I found this ancient church very near the main church in Perissa. It is fenced in, but they are so damaged you could easily jump over and have a closer look. It is signposted as the 'Early Christian Basilica of Ayia Erini'. Unfortunately I have not been able to get more information on its age. Leave a Comment
