    The Santorini Caldera

When the Santorini volcano exploded in the Mediterranean Sea, it left a massive 'caldera' nearly four miles wide!! Its walls uniquely rise up out of the sea and give the geologists and vulcanologists a great deal to study.

The wind at the edge of the caldera (crater) is usually stronger, so most of the mills of the island are built there along with villages of Santorini and Therasia.

    Blue haze

Fira, the capital of Santorini clings to the edge of a cliff, which is, in fact, the rim of the crater!!

You have a number of ways to get there either by riding the donkeys or mules, up the winding steps or, for a modern-day travel experience, climb aboard the cable car that first came into vogue about 20 years ago.

    Windmill at dusk

    Oia, (pronounced E-ah).

'The enchanting sunset' from high on the cliff-top you can witness the most magnificent views on Santorini. With picture-book roads winding around the cliffs that over look the sea you'll be lost in a dream in this romantic town.

    The Place to Snorkel!

    Ammoudi

Ammoudi is a little port down below Oia. There are a couple of restaurants and further along the path is the spot for great snorkelling!

If you want to do any sunbathing then get there early as there is only a small amount of space and once the flat bits are taken you just kind of have to find room amongst the rocks.

The water here is gorgeous and is definitely ideal for snorkelling.

    Going Down?

Oia is perched at the edge of the cliff about 5km from Thira Town. Part of it fell into the sea during the volcanic eruption about 40 years ago. It is worth visiting this part of the island as it isn't quite so busy as Thira Town.

Fresco of the Fisherman (now in the Museum)

It is one of the most important prehistoric settlements of the Aegean. The first habitation at the site dates from the Late Neolithic times (at least the 4th millenium B.C.)

    Not to be missed!

It above the town of Kamari, you'll have to ask someone there, in Kamari, for all the details and you should bring a flash light. Oh there is also a small Church there.

You have to go to the island of Thirassia, and its only village, Manolas, where you feel that time has stopped.

A liitle bit of of bus ride and not exactly "Off The Beatten Path". The sunset isn't worth the crowds and the hassel but the village and the views are great.

    The bells of Karterados

Just south of Fira you can find Karterados, a traditional village with spectacular architecture that's totally inspiring.
