Santorini is one of those places where you have to watch the sun go down.
Because of it´s steep location where the cliffs drop right in to the sea, the sunsets are spectacular and you get the profiles of this amazing island in a different light every minute.
Fira and Oia are the two best towns to watch it as they face the right direction and they are situated right on the caldera.

    Clifftop Sunsets

I heard of a clifftop restaurant in Fira which claims to be one of the best places on the island to watch the sun set; and so I made my way to Zafora at least an hour early nd enjoyed a feast of mezes and some yummy cocktails.

The tables by the balcony were prized by the guests so that it was almost ijmpossible to get one. We commandeered a table one row from the front on a higher level. As it turned out these tables were better as they were more comfortable, plus you could stand up and move around any time you wanted to take pics.

As it neared the time for sunset, people came in fromm the street asking the Manager if they could just stay and watch the spectacle. In fairness he allowed them, but gave priority to his paying guests.

He was a humorous guy and every so often he would stand up and shout "No more photographs." He would shout this at one or other unsuspecting guest and if you weren't thinking you'd get a fright. Everyone else would laugh.

It was a beautiful and funny experience. The light in this spot is just amazing. There are other restaurants and bars in the area so you can choose which you prefer.

This spot is right beside the access to the cable car.

    Incredible sunsets

So if you're going to Santorini you definitely don't even need this advice since you'll figure it out anyways, but all along the western coast of the island, incredible and otherworldly sunsets are on show every night.
A little after 9pm in the peak months the sun makes a quick and sudden slope down behind the distant island chains, and it really glares and reflects off of the island tops as it crashes into the water. Find a good viewing point or table at dinner, and you won't be disappointed!

    Sunset in Santorini

I went to Santorini with a girlfriend and we loved the sunset off of Ia. We got some advice from DoGreece.com, an excellent travel guide to Greece Travel to get there early and pick a good spot to view the sunset from because of the massive amounts of tourists in August. We picked a spot by the two blue-painted churches that one can see in almost every postcard sold in the newstands in Greece and it was awesome.
We were there in September, which i hear is the best time to go. (that or June) because it's not so crowded but still not deserted.
    anyway, just my two cents...

    Sunset At Oia

    Sunset, Oia

We drove to Oia taking 15 minutes from Fira , but spent just as much time finding a car park. We then followed the crowd through the village until we came to the very crowded west end of the village. This must be the most popular viewing point and a nice place to take photos whilst waiting for the sunset to commence.

The evening we visited was cloudy, however we still managed to see the sunset, but also had an enjoyable time being in the crowd and admiring the beautiful buildings.

For those who intend to dine at a restaurant I recommend you make a reservation.

    Sunset in Fira

    sunset from Fira

Yep as you can see, there aren´t many "things to do" in Santorini, but many things to see...and many places to take a picture!!
The sunset from Fira is not as famous as the one from Oia village, but at least for me it is also very beautiful, and one advantage is that the crowd of "professional sunset watchers" is way smaller...the sun usually hides itself over the volcano center at the end, but the houses get illuminated with the red light, which is something very nice to see...

    Sunset in Oia

even with a crapy camera, expect shots like that!

Sunsets in Santorini are definately a cliché, but be sure you will surrender like every one else, because they are truly amazing....the bizarre shape of the island turned it in a sunset view point, almost in every corner...
The villages with the most famous sunsets are Fira and Oia. Oia village is usually the chosen one, as you will see when you arrive and realize you must squeeze yourself in the crowd to get a good shot. The difference between Oia and Fira´s views is that Oia being in the edge of the island enables you to see the sunset over the sea and also almost the whole island on the other side.
But one thing that is really annoying about it, is that crowds of tourists gather to watch it. It resembles a lot a football match or a rock consert, really!!! Some people even invade local houses and climb up walls to get a previledged view....
So if you are planning to see the sunset, my advice is, get to Oia at least one hour and a half before, so that you can choose one spot to watch....

    SUNRISE !

On Santorini, you will always be in a huge crowd on the Caldera side to see the sunsets. They are beautiful and dramatic, but do not forget about the fantastic sunrises! These can only bee seen on the non-Caldera side and at an obscenely early hour in the morning. Do you have an early morning flight? Just stay out all night like I did and catch the amazing rising of the sun. It is very impressive. Please note: These photos were taken from the balcony of my room at Villa Romantic!

Santorini is well known for having one of the most beautiful sunsets. And it's true! Enjoying a glass of wine while watching the sun go down on the sea and viewing the caldera is an amazing thing to do.

I did it from my balcony in the Aroma Suites, in Fira and also watched it from Oia village. Both sites had wonderful sunset views, so relax, grab a glass of wine, hold your camera and shoot !

The sunset in Santorini is really a breath taking experience, specially if you see it from the top of the island.

When the sun will go down you will see colors on the sea, and the sky will be all red.

    Sunset, viewed from Fira
    1 more image

As the sun sets in the evening, the cliffside restaurants, bars and walkways of Fira and Oia fill with gathering tourists watching (and photographing) the sun's disappearance below the horizon out to sea.

Families, couples, tour groups (and this solo backpacker) find a terrace on which to enjoy a drink, a restaurant in which to dine or, in the case of this tight Yorkshireman, a wall on which to sit (and not have to pay anything!) while watching the sun's slow descent.

I never experienced the sunset viewed from Oia (which is supposed to be even more spectacular than the view from Fira), but made a point of sitting on the wall on each of my nights in Fira to see the sun's last rays of the day.

The view is spectacular as the sun casts a golden beam over the white buildings of Fira before dipping behind the isle of Thirassia and finally disappearing "below" the sea.

Get there early, especially if you want one of the prime (and free!) spots on the wall.

It is truly the best sunset experience not to mention most romantic. People are friendly and they will even recommend local catch for you. This is a little bit pricey but you pay for the view anyway.
