    Kaminakia beach

by EviP Written Aug 14, 2013

Kaminakia beach is at the south-west part of Astypalaia.
As local bus doesn't reach there, you have to have or rent a vehicle, though not necessarily a 4x4.
Yes, it is a 6km-dirt road to go down to Kaminakia, but both motorbikes and conventional cars can drive on it.
It is generally not recommended to go to Kaminakia when it is windy on the island, because you won't enjoy the beach as much, but if it is a little windy , motorbikers beware driving the turns on your way to and from there

it is definetely worth the effort as the beach has white, tiny pebbles and crystal turqoise waters, like a swimming-pool.

There are also free umbrellas and sunbeds
    and a local tavern

    Fishermen

by mvtouring Written Jul 2, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Watching the fishermen cleaning their nets and getting ready for the evening again was quite something to watch. I was also amazed at how young these guys were, nice to see that the youngsters are carrying on the traditions of the island.

    Livadhia

I took the bus to Livadhia and spent the day there at the beach. They have a very nice beach and it is not as steep and incline as the one at Pera Yialos. I found however that it was best to wear shoes at all the beaches that you could wear even in the water .

The old lady and her donkey

by mvtouring Written Jul 2, 2008

    3 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I could not help but be amazed by the speed at which the donkey transported the old lady. They side ride the donkies and seem to be quite at home on the back, I on the other hand would probably fall off after the fith stepl.

    The locals

by mvtouring Written Jul 2, 2008

    3 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Getting to know the locals and observing them is quite fun. The men all gather around late afternoon and sit in little groups drinking coffee or whatever takes their fancy and discuss the issues of the day at hand.

    Visit the castle

by mvtouring Written Jul 2, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

High up on the hill is the castle, but be prepared to walk up very steep alleyways and do a fair amount of stair climbing. It is however worth it even if just to get lost in the little streets and admiring the little houses and the old folk spinning and doing other great things.

I was not able to get inside any of the churches, they were all locked, so just had a look from the outside.

    The windmills

by mvtouring Written Jul 2, 2008

Up on Hora you will find the windmills on what the locals call the square. I am not sure what the purpose of the windmills are, but they are somewhat derelict.

    Archeological Museum

by mvtouring Written Jul 2, 2008

    3 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This one roomed museum is free with some very interesting pieces found around the island. Do pop in there if they are open, takes you all of 10 minutes to have googled over everything in there.

The harbour town is where I stayed and a must visit if you are staying elsewhere on the island. Just walk around and discover the little narrow streets hiding great finds.
