    Tree of Hippocrates

    by Twan Written Feb 8, 2012

    On Kos are several memorials to the physician Hippocrates, and for the god of medicine from the Greek pantheon: Asklepios, who had been teacher of Hippocrates. For example, the famous plane tree of Hippocrates in Kos is the capital city. There is also a Hippocratisch museum dedicated to him. Furthermore, there are several archaeological sites in or near the city, including a Roman amphitheater and a gymnasium. The capital, Kos is the tourist and cultural center of the island. Close to the harbor it is the 14th-century castle the Neratzia, in 1315 by the Knights of St. John of Rhodes was built. In the center of Kos is an ancient marketplace, the agora.

  • "Ippokrateia" series of cultural events

    by kastoriani Written Aug 19, 2007

    The "Ippokrateia" is a series of events such as photo exhibits, painting exhibits, concerts, dance performances, etc. that take place in Kos during the summer. There are bronchures with the schedule and other information circulating in the main town. If you plan on attending however, make sure to confirm that the event is actually taking place. I rushed to the Castle one evening to watch a show that was listed in the bronchure and there was nothing going on. The door was locked and there was no announcement or anything else posted as if the event was never planned. I never found out what happened.

    Snacks With Drinks

    Call That A Snack?

    It's usual to be given some sort of snack with your drinks. This is usually just a bowl of nuts or olives but can be more. At Cafe Central we got a bowl of mixed nuts and a bowl of marinaded raw vegetables (shown). It was almost a meal in itself.

    Sleeping Cat, Kos

    There are a variety of places in Kos where cats congregate, usually in green spaces where there is some shelter, such as below the castle walls by the harbour. Being a cat-lover I'm smitten by them all but stray cats are a problem in almost all of the Greek isles and there is no proper neutering program. Occasionally you will see a proper cat charity stand, where they do try to encourage neutering. It is better to support these stands than the random independant well-meaning people who ask for money for cat food (though that is hard to resist too).

    IT'S ALL GREEK TO ME

    It's always useful to know few words in the local language:

    Ego = I or Me
    Esi = You
    Aftos/Afti = He / She
    Ya = Hi or Bye depending on context
    Efxaristo = Thank you
    Kalimera = Good morning
    Kalinichta = Good night
    Katalaveno = I don't understand
    Pame = Let's go
    Parakalo = You're welcome
    Ti kanis = How are you

    Fayito = Food
    Nero = Water

    Pou = Where
    Resta = Change (money)
    Spiti = Home
    Aftokinito = Car
    Kalo = Good
    ..................................................................

    DID YOU NOW THAT : Greeks are apparently among the world's most active lovers? (BEWARE LADIES) and NO OFFENCE TO ANYONE :-) having sexual contact once every three days on average, according to a worldwide survey on sexual behavior.

    Ranking fourth in terms of sexual contact frequency, Greeks were topped only by the Americans, Russians and the French.

    Moreover, at a time when the world average in sexual partners is eight persons, Greeks boast a mean of 15 lovers, while only the French can 'up the ante' with an average of 16.

    In regards to contraception, a whooping 90 percent of sexually active Greeks claim to use some form of birth control, with 64 of them preferring condoms.
