The various beach resorts and villages on Kos are connected with Kos Town by a fairly frequent bus network. The main bus station is located in Kos Town (behind the Post Office) and a bus timetable can be found there. You can also visit the tourist information office in Kos Town to pick up a paper copy of the bus timetable. While there might be several buses a day between Kos Town and a given village, it is generally the case that these buses are not spread out equally throughout the day. Instead, there will tend to be one or two buses in the morning (at 8 or 9 am), maybe an early afternoon bus (at say 2pm) and then a late afternoon bus (eg. 5pm) and an evening bus (eg 7 or 8pm). The following details were correct as at May 2006: Buses between Kos Town and.... boat to Kos by sandysmith We arrived in Kos via the regular Dodecanese Express superfast catermaran service from Rhodes Town. Our schedule went straight to Kos but sometimes they call in at Symi first. Jouney time was just over 2 hours - departed at 8.30am and returned from Rhodes at 4.20pm prompt - giving us aboput 5 hours in Kos- which in the heat was enough for a day. Very efficient and comfortable service - a bit like a flying boat with much more leg room than a plane. Ticket price was 40 euros return - it was cheaper to buy from the harbour stalls at Mandraki harbour in Rhodes rather then the ticket office at Colona harbour. Theme: Ship/Boat

Bike park at Kos Harbour by zizkov Everywhere around Kos Town, at least. Being very flat along the shore area, ideal for even the laziest of cyclists. At the Psalidi side you can cycle almost into town without going on the main road, and in this area at least the drivers are not the maniac Greek drivers of legend - nobody is in much of a hurry and everyone is used to the cyclists. Lots of cycle hire places. I hired mine from Ideal cycles just along from the Kypriotis, who must have had over a hundred cycles. Most bikes are step through 3-speed town cycles at around 4E per day, but I hired a 24 speed alu front susp MTB for 11E/2days. Most places also have little motos or full size motorbikes for hire. I worried slightly when I arrived at Kos Town as there was nowhere to chain my bike to (essential measure back home). Then I realised that there were about 200 other bikes in the same situation. Just drop the kickstand and put the cable lock round the back wheel. Some people didn't ever bother with that. All the bikes come with dynamos, so people still whiz about in the dark. It wasn't unusual to see family groups heading back from town, lights blazing, at 10 or 11 at night. Leave a Comment Theme: Bicycle

boats in Kos harbour by sandysmith Just as in Rhodes the harbour is full of boats offering excursions. The trip across to Turkey and various other small islands as a days trips with a BBQ lunch - a really enjoyble way to spend a day - seemed to be the most popular and frequent on offer. Just take some time looking at the boats and see which trip you'd like to make. Theme: Ship/Boat

bicycles for hire by sandysmith Again, as in Rhodes, mopeds are a very popular way of getting around. Hardly anyone on one of these wore a helmet, despite spot checks being made. The town is compact and bicycle hire was also popular - a better option I think, especially for the short ride out to Asklepieion. Cost is about 3 euros per day for bicycle hire. Theme: Motorcycle

the blue train by sandysmith There are two tourist trains in Kos - the green one does a city tour (not taken by us as it was fairly compact to walk around) and a blue train which makes the 4km trip out to Asklepieion archaelogical site. Ticket prices are 3.50 euros for the round trip - well worth it if short on time or on a day trip like we were. Theme: Train

City bus by Helga67 The city bus connects the centre with the outskirts and hotels along the Lambi and Agios Fokas beach. There is also a city bus to Platani and Asklepion. From our hotel in Lambi to the centre it took 10 minutes and we paid 0.90 EUR each on the bus. On the way back to the hotel we bought our tickets at the bus office at the Mandraki harbour and paid 0.70 EUR each. The bus to Lambi beach is no. 2. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

Blue Star Ferries ticket office, Kos Town by SWFC_Fan, 1 more photos During a Greek island hopping trip in May 2006, I found myself in the position of wanting to travel from Kos (in the Dodecanese islands) to Naxos (in the Cyclades islands). The two islands aren't too far apart (perhaps 5 or 6 hours by ferry) and I assumed the journey would be a straight forward one. However, after checking the ferry schedules at the tourist office, it soon became apparent that there were no direct boats from Kos to Naxos (or neighbouring Paros). I enquired about this with the tourist office staff and they told me that, due to different ferry companies operating in different island groups, it wasn't always easy to find ferries from the Dodecanese islands to the Cyclades islands, especially outside the high season. After a bit of research on the Internet, I found that I had a few options: i) Take a hydrofoil to neighbouring Kalymnos (of which there are several each day) and then catch the early ferry to Piraeus (which operates a few days a week at 05:30) and stops at both Naxos and Paros. I didn't like the idea of having to be up so early in the morning. ii) Take a ferry to Amorgos on the eastern edge of the Cyclades and then connect from there to Naxos. I didn't know how frequent the connections would be from Amorgos to Naxos and I didn't want to be stranded there for too long, so this was a no-go. iii) Take the overnight Piraeus ferry, which stops at Syros en-route, and then make my way from Syros to Naxos. I opted for this latter option, and the following details were correct as at May 2006: - I caught the "Blue Star 2" ferry which left Kos Town, from the port in front of the castle, at 21:15; - The journey time was approximately 7 hours, and so I arrived at Syros at close to 4am. Even at this time in the morning, there were crowds of accommodation touts waiting for the boat's arrival; - The ferry operates on the following route: Rhodes - Kos - Leros - Patmos - Syros - Piraeus - The cost of a one way ticket from Kos to Syros was 29.90 Euros.
