Kos Island Things to Do

  • Antimachia Fortress

23 km south of Kos, not far from the airport, on a hill above Antimachia, is the imposing Venetian castle. We spent a while up her exploring the ruins and enjoying the far reaching views over Kos Island - it was rather windy though so had to wrap up warm. There are a couple of old venetian churches within the walls wth some faded fresoes - the...

  • Zia - Mountain Villages

Zia is a touristic mountain village 16 km south of Kos Town. Mnay go here for the tavernas at suset for the lovely views. The streets are lined with craft shops - climb a bit above these and you'll find the real old Zia with watermills and quieter cafes. The more adventurous will climb the mountain - Mount Dikaion. We saw several people gettign...

  • Old Kefalos

Kefalos is the other end of the island from Kos Town - some 43 km away. The old town is built on a stone height, dominated by the imposing windmill of Papavasilis. The beaches and main resort areas are at the bottom of the hill!

  • Mastichari

Mastihari is situated some 22 kilometres western to the town of Kos. It serves as a ferry port for the nearby island of Kalymnos and has a less touristic feel to the village. Lovely tavernas on a beach promenade. Hire a sunbed for the day on the fine sandy beach, blissfully peaceful in the low season, and just relax and stay for a meal at one of...

  • Three Islands Cruise on the Kalypso

The three islands cruise on the Kalypso began at Mastichari harbour from where we sailed to the harbour town of Pothia in Kalymnos. We spent a couple of hours wandering around it, and were given lunch at a restaurant looking onto the harbour, after which we continued to the unnoccupied island of Plati where we dropped anchor and swam from the...

  • Tingaki

Tingaki s normally a lovely sandy beach ..but in October it was virtually deserted. Early winds (a seasonal event apparently) had come early and the waves were tossing up seaweed onto the beach shore. To swim in the water you would have to wade through thick clumps of seaweed - yuk! The locals didn't bother to clear it as they knew it would jut...

Kos Island Restaurants

  • The Restaurant that Has it ALL !

I visited Oromedon Restaurant twice while in Kos.I honestly cannot find words to say about the fast service, the tasty food, the ambience of the restaurant with the most beautiful sunsets. Both nights we were lucky enough to have the most stunning views from up there. The restaurant is located in the mountain village of Zia and overlooks the...

  • Pizzas to die for

We were here in September October 2006.The surroundings may not be to everyones taste, but the food certainly is! Don't be put off by the large screens showing sport (or fashion), you can always sit with your back to them. The locals eat here - always a good sign. They have a full menu, but the fresh baked special pizza is best - try one between...

  • The Best Atmosphere

Good food and plenty of it! Pretty much whatever your main meal, it will come with chips(fries) rice, salad, potatoes & veg. Most nights I ate the main course and left the rest as it was far too much - unless you have a big appetite. You also got a complimentary liqueur at the end of the evening. The best thing really is the atmosphere, the waiters...

Kos Island Nightlife

  • Bar Street

Bar street is probably the most popular nightlife spot in the town of Kos although nightlife bars are scattered all around town. During the day bar street is empty and there is virtually no life there. At night it gathers huge crowds of tourists willing to have some fun.Beware of one thing: usually what you get from a labelled bottle is not what...

  • Walking in the dark

The town of Kos does not easily fall asleep. When it becomes dark people go to bars and discos... as well as for walks :-) I'm not a fan of evening expeditions to bars so walks around the city, down the marina and around the Castle were my best choice.

Kos Island Transportation

  • car hire in Kos town

If you choose to hire a car to get around Kos island, which I highly recommend, then it is essential to do it with a good rent a car agency. We returned from Kos island in August 2011. and were very lucky to find an excellent and highly reliable rent a car agency. It's a family run business and their name is AUTOWAY. Thy are very conveniently...

  • Pseudo-trains

These 'trains' are operated by the bus carrier, KTEL. One of them (the green one) takes tourists to a round trip of the town and the other one (the blue one) carries people to the Asklepieion. They are relatively expensive and slow but may constitute some kind of tourist attraction.By the way, there is no other public transportation from Kos to...

  • Flying Dolphin

Ferries and boats bring people from and to Kos all the time. A ferry trip from Athens takes about 5 or 6 hours and from Bodrum, Turkey about 45 minutes*. Ferries connect Kos with other Dodecanese islands and are a very popular means of transportation among Greeks.* I can't tell you exactly how long due to the following. One day we were studying...

Kos Island Shopping

  • Real Supermarket

The best place to shop for food and other daily stuff is Vasiliadis supermarket. It's a large two-storey shop located to the right on the way from downtown Kos to Lambi. As far as I noticed locals do their shopping at Vasiliadis' as it's the cheapest and best supplied shop.

  • Different Prices

Anything you need can be bought on the spot. Greece is a relatively cheap country. I noticed that tourists from the UK found Greek tobacco products very attractive. A friend of mine who is a doctor was very interested in some medicines which are much cheaper there than in Poland.

  • Road Chapels - part 2.

One day we took a walk along the roads of Kos, just to take pictures of the tiny buildings. We didn't have much time as it was getting dark but we managed to gather this collection of pictures for you to admire.

  • Road Chapels - part 1.

During your trips to Greece you'll certainly pay some attention to small church-like constructions built usually close to roads. Some of those tiny churces (about 1.5 m tall) look quite rich, some of them are poor and unattended. If you have a closer look you'll see that an absolute majority of those constructions contain a few pictures, an oil...

Kos Island Warnings and Dangers

  • Mosquitoes

Argh! Never had problems with these before but got bit several times and several looked nasty on my legs and body. I noticed two sorts of flying monsters, the big obvious looking mosquitoes and some smaller fuzzy looking ones. The little fuzzy ones seemed to love our bathroom and that little drain they have in the shower floor, after locating where...

  • Road conditions

Take care if you follow the road past Ag Fokas - it terminates in a dead end after about 3 of the most dangerous miles I've ever endured. Narrow road, poor surface with potholes and a noticeable camber, steep drop over both sides of the road and a strong gusting wind. We were on a moped & it was terrifying.

  • Kos, the darker side

I completely agree with Micacka's tip. I have just returned home early from my job in Kardamena, Kos due to a horrible experience in where I too had a lucky escape. I was held at knife point in my own apartment after letting my guard down. DONT DO IT!!! Girls NEVER walk alone at night and never open your door without knowing who's there. Kos is a...

Kos Island Tourist Traps

  • trip to bodrum

Couldnt agree more with Gale. our ferry was late and as stated nobody was around to help. There is very little shelter (if any) and people became faint and quite testy! a couple of families began to argue amongst themselves. The heat in Turkey is much hotter than kos so do be very careful and take lots of water. Go on any day avoiding Tuesdays...

  • Tuesday trip to Bodrum

Tuesday is the market day in Bodrum so people from all around (including Kos) go there to do their shopping. The thing is that no matter what day of the week it is, you can buy anything in Bodrum anyway but on Tuesday you will have to wait in full sun for hours to get on your ferry to Turkey. In our case the ferry was 2 hours late and nobody did...

  • Kefalos

The coast of Kefalos, named Skinos Bay is a particularly beautiful slice of the island. This part of the land mass was detached from Kos, after the big earthquake in the year 1933. Now, it is a quieter place, where only few tourists go.

  • Nissyros

From Kefalos it is closer but also from Kos town you can take a day trip to Nissyros. I recommend it very much. The vulcano is amazing and also the little town is wonderful and has lovely cafes and restaurants and a special atmosphere also you can walk all the way up and visit the cathedral which is impressing and has great views.

Kos Island Sports & Outdoors

  • Gyms

I didn't see those in Greece mainland, neither did I see those in Crete - tourist gyms! You can go to a tourist gym in Kos at a moderate cost. The gyms are well equipped and the service is friendly.

Kos Island Favorites

  • Best Sunset on Kos

They say the the best sunsets on Kos island can be seen at the mountain village of Zia. Undoubtedly the sunset at Zia is lovely but restaurants tend to be quit busy and touristic. We found a better alternative at Mastichari - a quiet seaside taverna on the beach front enjoying really tasty authentic Greek meals at the Tasty Palace taverna...

  • Beaches in the middle of the town

Kos town is small and it is mainly inhabited by tourists - in full season. That is why locals do their best to bring tourist attractions as close to their guests as possible. For me it doesn't make much sense to spend a day on a beach located almost in the middle of a busy town but as you can see, a lot of people like it.

  • Locals' Beloved Cafe :)

This cafe is placed in the main square of Kos town. Nothing special, really. We however liked it a lot. It is always busy, full of people and a great family atmosphere. Just be there.... :-)
