Lardos is a smalll village some 10km from more well known Lindos in the southern part of Rhodes Island. The village is typically greek and caters for the residents as much as the visitors with its popular cafe and bars around its village fountain - bustling by day and even more so by night.
Not as large as a village as I first though but plenty of places to try in a week stay's if not two.
Lardos Beach was bout 500m walk from our hotel base. Other hotel complexes front the sand and shingle beach providing the usual facilities - water sports, sunbeds and food outlets for snacks. Not the best of beaches in the area but good enough if you don't want to go too far. Walking a few minutes along the beach you will find areas of he beach shaded by trees - this was a nicer area.
Local fishermen can be seen in the morning bringing back octopus and squid, washing them out in the sea water too at the far end near the road - so don't swim there!
Sunrise Hotel Beach - near Pefkos
The second day here we set off to walk to Pefkos - some 4-5 km away - along the beach. By road is a bit tedious along the main road and then down another busy road which goes through Pefkos and onto to Lindos. However it was hot and by the time we got to the edge of Pefkos I was tired of passing all those sunbeds and was happy to stop at this pretty cove backed by the Sunrise Hotel - the food there at lunch time was really good too and I noticed other british tourists staying here. Water was a bit rocky in places so I wore my swim shoes but it was an idyllic, quieter places that Pefkos proper to chill out for a few hours and enjoy a swim. Good views of the beach from the hotel beach taverna too.
OK eventually after a few hiours lazing on the beach we went up to the road to walk the rest of the way into Pefkos resort itself - parts of the beach after the Sunrise hotel were quite rocky and it looked not really possible to walk all the way into Pefos by that way after all. Our tour rep had desribed Pefkos as the Tenerife of Rhodes - it certainly is more developed with supermarkets, bars and cafes strung out along the road but I wouldn't go as far to call it over-developed - not as much as Faliraki in northern Rhodes. Anyway the beach at Pefkos is lovely and sandy, the water is clear and shallow for a long way out so really good for those who are not strong swimmers and veryt good for families. Water boats go to Lindos from here and glass bottom boat trips as well from the nearby little harbour.
Pefkos Beach Taverna
There are two tavernas on the beach at Pefkos - we usually went to the one on the left hand side from the beach road - the Lee Beach Taverna. Lovely place for meals or frappes - the coffee mocha nes with chunks of chocolate in were divine. Very friendly cats here who like to curl up on your knee and a wonderful place to enjoy the late afternnoon sunshine and watch the sunset before heading back to the hotel for the evening. Very idyllic place.
The church in Lardos is tucked away in a quiet corner away from the bustling cafes, with its tall bell tower and half hidden by cypress trees. A quaint fountain stands in one corner of its peaceful pebbled courtyard - often a features of churches in greece.
