by Maggies Rhodes people are extremly nice. They are very open, warm and helpful. They seem very relaxed and peaceful. They don't run, they are just taking their time, which is something most people in big cities are longing for so much. To see more pictures check out the Rhodes People travelogue.

The Kiss Fountain in centre of Faliraki by Fam.Rauca, 4 more photos The Kiss is a beautiful statue placed in the Central Square in Faliraki. The statue makes part from a wonderful fountain, situated in front of the hotel Blue Waves, and not far from the beach of the station. This is an important point in the station, a meet point for many young people. This is a wonderful art creation in the village. Leave a Comment

Marmaris, Turkey by steventilly Marmaris is also only a day trip away. An expensive daytrip though - the port taxes are high on this trip, due no doubt to Greek/Turkish "rivalries". Also, with this trip you cannot stay overnight, it's not allowed and could invalidate your flight ticket for your return home (this might not always be the case - check!). It was a pleasant trip - well, more than that, it was lovely. And I'm glad that I got to see this little part of Turkey, it made me feel that I'd like to come back, either to here or another part. The boat to Marmaris leaves the Kolonna harbour every day.

Symi Harbour, Symi by steventilly Symi is a beautiful island about 1 hour from Rhodes by fast hydrofoil or catermeran. You can go for a daytrip - this will usually call at the monestary of Panormitis at the other end of Symi Island before continuing up to the main town of Symi - Symi Town! The boats leave from Mandraki Harbour at about 9:30 each day and return at about 3:30 (all times approximate and seasonal, and an occasional boat leaves from Kolonna rather than Mandraki, so check). You don't have to do the daytrip though - you can stay over on Symi. Hoteliers and the like wait for the daytrip boats and hold placards saying "rooms to rent". We stayed for 4 nights on Symi at the Hotel Opera House. It was a wonderful place - if you do decide to stay on Symi stay there. I doubt you'd be disappointed. There's enough to see and do on Symi to last you a few days, in fact we'd like to have stayed longer. It's a different pace of life to Rhodes, and so very relaxing.

It's hard to describe anything on the main road to Butterfly Valley as being 'off the beaten track' but the small Anastasia Triantafillou winery nearby was quiet when we visited. We were given personal attention and invited to sample about seven of their wines, both red and white, from dry to sweet. We walked out with six bottles, so the sales tactics worked! They use several local grape varieties you will be unfamiliar with which produce surprising flavours. You'd swear their dry white oaked Thalassinos wine made from the Athiri grape was a red wine, it may be an acquired taste for some but not an expensive experiment for 6 euros a bottle. Their Cabernet Sauvignon is nice and dry, a bit pricier at 7 euros a bottle but go on, treat yourself. They also do sweet whites which verge on being a dessert wine, ask for a taste and see what you think. And it's all made organically, so it must be good for you, *glug glug*. Right across the road is the Natura Rodos shop selling more local wine plus liquers, soaps, herbs, honey and other treats. You're free to sample the liquers (the coffee and anise seed one was nice) plus there's a vat of organic oil olive fresh from the shopkeeper's grove which at 5 euro a litre was an absolute steal. We had ours with bread and salad at every meal we prepared for the rest of the trip and still had plenty to cart home. The shops are on the main road leading north out of Butterfly Valley on your way to Theologos on the west coast. If you're coming from the east coast, turn at Afandou and head inland past Psinthos, following signs for the butterflies. Leave a Comment

On the east coasr of Rhodes we found this remote monastery - a short detour of the main road down to Prasonisi. Bit of a stark white building is the monastery of Zoodohos Pigi (source of life). It dates from teh 1840's and is built over the ruins of an early Christian church. Notice the classical colums with Corinthinthian capitals in the exterior ogf the monaastery. Rhodes has countless monasteries and chapels - every few miles there seems to be a brown sign indicatring one.

The Byzantine church of Ayious Nikolaos (St. Nikolas), on the road between Eleousa and Archipoli, is a stone church of the 13th Century, and contains some unique Byzantine paintings from the 14th Century. Opposite the church is a fresh water spring where you can quench your thirst. When we first found this church (in the early 80's) it certainly was off the beaten path, now however it is plagued by coach trips which stop here as part of excursions.

Sunset towards the outlying islands by M0B1US We all know that the sun sets in the west, so where better to see a sunset than on the west coast!!? Still, to my mind the sunset itself is not the only thing that makes for a great sunset, but the setting as well... So this is why, if you have your own transport, I recommend a purpose-built refreshment stop for your sunset viewing needs on the road between Kritinia and Siana (I think it is south of the turn off to Emponas, but don't quote me!)... You can't miss it, you'll be driving high up and then on the coastal side there will be a shack and a seating area on the side of the road - just time your drive-by to coincide with sundown and et voila! The view is of the outlying islands off Rhodes including Alimia and far off Halki... Leave a Comment

If you leave Afandou on the main road to the beach you will cross the main lindos rd and about 300yd further on (on the left) is an old army base whith has been made into a large restaraunt, next to it is the Church of Our Lady Katholiki, The church is decorated with wall paintings originating from the 17th Century. In August a big religious festival is held.
