Mama Sofia: One good spot amongst many deceptions

Soleiman's Mosque - close to Mama Sofia

We had tthe opportunity to try several different restaurant in Rhodes old town (no chance of finding a real reastaurant in the modern town - just in case you'd think about that) and none made us feeling better than Mama Sofia. In the beginning you wouldn't think that, as it appears just as one among the many "typical" Greek cuisine restaurant. As a matter of fact, they serve real Greek home-made cuisine, without loosing themselves in unuseful gorgeous presentation of dishes that "used" to be Greek , but whose taste has been forgotten in the kitchen. Mama Sofia still offers you the full flavour of Greek tastes.

Favorite Dish: Simi's Shrimps were maybe a little too oily. Sardines, both grilled or fried, were great. Taramasalata too greasy with mayonnaise. Dolmades, with wheat instead of rice: very interesting and softer than usual. Grilled octopus: very good.

Taverna Kostas: You wouldn't expect it here

This was a reward for my walks down small and unattended streets. We went down Phytagora only because it looked poor, old and far from being a tourist attraction. Suddenly we noticed this local taverna and that was it.

We tried eating in other restaurants around town but we always came back to Kostas. And it was not only for food but also for the stunning smile of the owner, Kosta, as well as for the nice garden view on sunny days.

Favorite Dish: The best choice - in my humble opinion - was bougiourdi. We had it again and again and couldn't help ordering it. Tzatziki is a standard appetizer so I won't even try and recommend it as there is no need to do that.

I wouldn't order baked potatoes with cheese again because there was hardly any cheese there.

The best companion for any meal is local retsina :-)

Patrick Monroe Bar Cafe: Rhodes "Cheeers"

All kinds of drinks, just about anything. There is a special friendly caring atmosphere. I was actually there only once but passed by several times the next day and each time the owner made sure to call out to greet me. The night I was there was the end of the tourist season and customers were going up to the owner and waiter shaking hands and kissing goodbye. Customers were a mixed group from all over the world. This is a bar that also helps out stray dogs.

Favorite Dish: I only tried the Brandy Alexander and it was very good. They didn't skimp on the brandy.

The Luna: Friendly Welcome - Good Food

The Luna's menu is varied ranging from pizza's to lamb chops and everything in between. It has a clean and friendly atmosphere and the staff are most attentive. There is a small internet cafe at the rear and it only costs 3 euros an hour. They also have SKY TV. Nice place would go back again.

Favorite Dish: I had an Hawian pizza and lamb chops and if I was pushed I would have to say the lamb.

some fantastic food, a little different, but mostly still distinctly greek. Lovely views of sunset.

to find:

from lindos centre you can go donw to beach and along to left, the taverna is up some steep steps a few hundred metres along the beach, (thereis a sign on steps) OR along main street and follow signs for pefki island resort, to hotel supermarket and along a track (on your right) as you pass supermarket, comes to back of the restaurant

Favorite Dish: I had lamb stuffed with pine nuts and dried fruit. i went back again another night for the same thing (and have never done that before anywhere)

mussels were also lovely.

Blue Palm: Fuses old and new
SLK profile photo

2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

SLK 40 reviews

It describes itself as a Cafe Bar, Restaurant, Satellite TV, Music Bar. Pretty much sums it up!
3 Large screens mean you have a choice of something to watch (just ask the boss Nikos). While I was there each night they showed Big Brother/Live football, ok not to everyones taste but the place was packed. Don't like that? Music videos play on.

The food was very good, spaghetti carbonara was surprisingly good and they do an excellent Margarita. In fact the Blue Palm was the venue for my birthday. Mum asked Nikos to get a cake, bingo, next night their it was some fantastic strawberry creation. And that's what I mean about old and new. Yes there are the big screens feeding you music, football and whatever else is on, the cream/cane sofas are comfy but the big difference is the more old style service. That fact that the first night the boss comes over and chats with you, the fact that they remember what you had to drink, ok might be superficial but they are important touches that make you feel relaxed, welcome and more than another Euro coming through the door.

Favorite Dish: Tsaksiki+pitta
Mousaka
Spaghetti Carbonara - better than I've had in many Italian restaurants at home.

ROOFTOP RESTAURANT

Lovely traditional greek food is plentyfull in old Rhodes town, there are quite a few rooftop restaurants scattered about the town so look out for those while your thinking of somewhere to eat

Favorite Dish: You can't come to Greece and not try the greek salad, try it with a little bread and a cold bottle of wine

Well haraki is a fantastic place! And i can tell you that it's even more fantastic if you spend your days in Joy pool bar!
joy Pool Bar is quality! Friendly owner (pavlos) lovely atmosphere! Great music! You just have to visit this place!

Quality is not just a word just have a look at the liquer shelves!

Breakfast is simple amazing! kitchen has a window so you can see inside!

I spent all my time in joy pool and when i go back i ll simple do the same!

The bad thing in haraki is that bar owners argue with each other the whole time and as a customer when you are at the sea front you are in danger of getting bitten up! Specially from the scotish woman who owns a bar there!

Heaven on earth is also a beautiful place to spend an evening! Andrea is such a nice girl!

The best restaurant that we visited was chef tommies! We rented a car from M&S and we were totally satisfied! Anyway this octomber am staying again in Alia studios and i 'll be spending my day and night in Joy Pool Bar!

Favorite Dish: PIMPS JUICE joy's special burger and morning english huge breakfasts for only 4 euros

I cannot remember the name of the taverna but it was on the only road out of haraki and stands on its own. The food was excellent, the people were lovely and judging by the repeat visits from us and other customers we were not alone in thinking that this taverna was special.

Favorite Dish: The homemade lamb in the oven. Mouthwateringly delicious.

Argos Fish Taverna: fish for thought

At least dick turpin wore a mask

Having a nice relaxing day on the beach, our last day in Haraki. We decided to go and have a light lunch at the fish taverna on the beach. For one shared greek salad , 2 " micro" fish a\nd 2 small beers. 50 euros. I was livid to say the least, these people are rip off merchants. Haraki has no money exchange so our fish turned out to be very expensive when you add in the trip to lindos to get more money!! Definately thumbs down to this taverna.
