Rhodes (Island) Things to Do

  • The second time around

Lorraine wasn’t over keen on going to Rhodes but I convinced her it would be worthwhile. Besides, our recommended accommodation was in the old city (my choice) because I figured it would be good to soak up the atmosphere at night. The fact that so much of the Knights Templar town is still intact and there’s a harbour, once graced by one of the Seven...

Not all craftwork in Greece is mass produced in factories. Hand-made creations by traditional artisans maintain a high standard and a remarkably low price. • Invited out by a Greek

If a Greek invites you out for dinner or a drink, don't EVER try to make him "split the bill in half" as we often do here in Northern Europe. I know some tourists who wanted to be nice to their host for the evening, and they snapped the bill out of his hand and paid it. Never has a friendship been that close to ruin, and the Greek man was more...

Rhodes (Island) What to Pack

  • Rhodes Island Packing List...

Many beaches in Rhodes are rocky (not sandy), so if you have sensitive feet, bring swim shoes. Strong sunscreen and mosquito repellent are very necessary in Rhodes. Even if you don't burn easily, you should still wear really strong sunscreen. You can bring mosquito spray or maybe some cotton pants and long-sleeves to wear at night.

  • Light but protective clothing is a must!

There are hundreds of tourist shops selling amazing trinkets, so make sure you have some room in your baggage. Also, a good back-pack or shoulder bag is ideal for taking your belongings with you to go exploring. If you are going in the summer months it can get extremely hot, so light coloured, loose fitting clothing is a must. Make sure you take a...

Walk through one of the entrances in the castle wall and you walk back over 1,000 years. The Byzantine walls (7th-13th c.) were added to and strengthened after a series of sieges starting from the Egyptian in 1444 to when Grand master Carretto (1513-21) made the land wall three times thicker. Alas, it was to no avail when in 1522 the town was...
