 | Rodos (City) Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 220 | | In the Medieval Town of Rhodes (or Old Town) you may for sure enjoy one of the most interesting waks on the island. Do not be misled by the term "medieval" into thinking that what you will see is a ruined and deserted city. When you approach the walls of the Old Town of Rhodes, you are about to enter the oldest inhabited medieval town in Europe. A bustling neigbourhood of some 6000 people, who live and work in the same buildings in which the Knights of St. John lived six centuries ago. It's a thrill to behold. Medieval buildings, mosques, traditional fountains, oriental motifs, Byzantine and Gothic churches, shops and cafeterias are scattered throughout the Old Town of Rhodes, all blending together to create a unique and picturesque whole. There are roughly 200 streets or lanes that simply have no name. Getting lost here is not a defeat; it's an opportunity. Whenever you feel the need to find your bearings, you can ask for Sokratous street, which is the closest the Medieval City comes to having a main street. The Palace of the Grand Masters, reconstructed by the Italians in 1940 after it was demolished by a gunpowder explision in 1856, stands out because of its imposing entrance and well built towers and battlements. The interiors of the buildings, decorated with priceless treasures, are equaly impressive. Leave a Comment Address: Rodos city

Most visitors of the island's east coast flow to Lindos (47 km from the city of Rhodes), built on the ruins of the ancient Doric town of the same name. In medieval times Lindos was the second most important centre of the island, after the city of Rhodes itself. The ancient Acropolis was then built into a castle. It is said that St. Paul the Apostle landed here when he came to the island of Rhodes; accordingly, the tiny harbour on the other side of the village has been named 'Agios Pavlos'. Under the steep cliff of the Acropolis lies the present townlet, charming with its whitewashed houses and pebbled courtyards. Houses retain traditional interiors, heavy ironwork on balconies and brown windows. Some 15th-century houses have been officially declared traditional buildings to be preserved. One should also visit the church of the Virgin Mary (Panagia) of Lindos and the chapel of Agios Pavlos. A series of steps leads to the Acropolis. Inside the main gate we discern the ruins of the Knights' Lodge and the byzantine church of St. John. Outside the Doric Stoa the prow of a Lindian Hellenistic trireme has been carved in a rock (4.5m x 5m). We cross the Doric Stoa (5th century BC) with its 42 columns (20 have been restored) and climb the majestic staircase to a higher terrace with Propylaean ruins (5th century BC). From this point we reach the Sanctuary of Lindian Athena, with its elegant bi-prostyle temple on the edge of the cliff (4th century). Ruins of an ancient theatre have been found on the slope of the Acropolis. There are other beauties on this part of the island besides antiquities. Leave a Comment Address: Lindos

This is an imposing building in the middle of the old town of Rodos. The castle is placed on a surface of 80 metres lightness auf 75 metres heaviness. The construction is situated on a lower Acropolis in the inside of the ancient walls. One can not know the exactly time point for the build of the castle, but it is certain, that the Temple of Helios lies below the foundations of the palace. The knights took up the fortress in the 14th century and rebuilt it, beginning 1320. The new construction of the imposing castle was the residence of the Grand Master, the administrative centre, but also an important fortification of the old town. The palace was destructed as the Ottomans occupied the town, in 1522, and by the earthquake in 1480-1481. During the Ottomans occupation, the palace was transformed into a prison. A big explosion, in the cellar of the Cathedral of St John, in the year 1856, destructed not only the cathedral, but also a large part of the palace. It was rebuilt into the time period 1937-1940, under the Italians, and after the plans of the architect Vittorio Mesturino. Today, the palace is a very important architectural piece, a very important edifice of Rodos. The imposing entrance in the castle, the gate with two semicircular towers, the inside courtyard with its Roman statues, the large halls, the marble stairways, the early Christian mosaic from Kos, and other extraordinary art works, are to be visited in the Palace of the Grand Master. Wonderful gardens with plane trees and colourfully flowers surrounded the walks of the castle and give a special charmingly to it. Into the large garden in front of the palace, in the summer time, there are the Sound and Light spectacles, a great attraction for many visitors. Leave a Comment

The entrance into the inside of the old city of Rodos, one can make through the eleven gates of the walls. These gates make the connection between the two sections of the city: the Ancient city and the new city of Rodos. The architectural style of the construction of the gates is different from one to another, as the result of the time period of the built and of the constructors. You can make a round stroll along the old walls, going through the gates, and admiring the superb constructions. The Old City Wall is an impressive construction, a wall with a length of 4 km and with 11 gates, which make possible the entrance into the ancient town. It is a masterwork of medieval architecture that makes the connection between the old and the new parts of the town. The wall is a fortification that was built for the resistance opposed the attacks to the security of the old city. It is an unforgettable experience, to make a round walk on the top of the wall. The palace is a big edifice, situated on the low acropolis of the town. The view of the palace from the Mandraki Harbour is an imposing reality in the middle of the history. The wonderful construction is the middle point of Rodos, and an attraction for all the visitors of the town. Leave a Comment

The walls around the castle of Grand Master were made as a double fortification, with the objective to defend the edifice. Between the two sides of the wall, one should put water, as an additional protect for the castle. That happened newer, but this sector of the construction is at the present a green side of the region, an additional garden of the palace. Plane trees and bushes with colourfully flowers are there between the walls in this castle moat. Many stone balls there are still on the place. Leave a Comment

A lovely, mountainous island Simi . While its interior is punctuated with small valleys, its coastline alternates between being steep and rocky or sandy and indented with little coves. In antiquity it bore the names Aigli and Metapontis. It took its present name from the nymph Syme, who was Poseidon's wife. After its conquest by the Knights of St. John in 1373, commerce and shipping flourished until steam replaced sail. The stately mansions in the main town date from this period, which reached its peak in the 19th century. The capital in the north of the island bears the same name and is divided into the upper and lower town, Ano Simi and Kato Poli. The lower town is also called Yialos. The two districts are linked by a lane so steep it has steps. It is flanked by charming neoclassical houses, some of them painted in warm pastel colours, with balconies and peaked, red tile roofs. Many of them also are embellished with neoclassical features on the doors and windows. Their interiors are decorated with wood carvings, the locals having been adept at the craft for generations. The highest point in Ano Simi is capped by the usual castle of the Knights of St. John, whose emblem can be seen above the main portal. The traditional village of Emborios is Simi's second port. The ancient town of Metapontis was situated close by. One of the island's most famous landmarks is the monastery of the Archangel Michael Panormitis on the southwest coast. Built in the early 18th century, it overlooks the bay bearing its name in a setting combining mountain and sea. It contains marvellous Byzantine frescoes and an intricately carved iconostasis. There is no lack of wonderful beaches. You'll find good swimming at Yialos, Pedio, Emborios, Marathounda, Nanou as well as on the nearby islets of Agia Marina and Nimos Leave a Comment
