Walk to Red Beach, or more properly Ammouchosti, from Livadia - it's an easy walk detailed in most guides and marked clearly on the island map. The sea is very clear and excellent for snorkelling.

A beautifully renovated old house, with a wonderful terrace with views down the valley to Eristos.
Very civilised, very cool

If visiting in July and August a must is "Mikro Horio after Midnight" - an abandoned village where only the church of the Panayia and a music bar are still in use. The music is loud (the mix of dance and Greek depending on Yianni and Yiorgo's mood)and, on a good night, everyone will be having a seriously good time - including the mayor! The ruined houses are gently lit and as everyone becomes more mellow - the sun rises over Turkey in the distance and the goats having woken come to see what all the fuss is about.
One of the most magical spots in Greece......
Dress Code: None - jeans and t shirt are fine, but if you feel like dressing up this is OK too (ladies - not too high heels, this is an old village, there's a lot of natural stone in the pathways.)

The fastest way to get around the islands is by Hydrofoil, which take a fraction of the time it would normally take a ferry to travel, which is vital if you are short of time but long on itinerary.
As part of our day excursion to the islands outlying Rhodes we took the Tilos Sunstar Hydrofoil to Nisyros via Tilos. It was a very modern boat and looked practically brand new and was very comfortable.
The only problem about the Hydrofoil is the lack of windows and the consequent romance of ferry travel - instead you feel like you're in an aircraft hull scudding along the surface of the water...
Another slight gripe is the fact that the Tilos Hydrofoil seems to spend an inordinate amount of time docked at Tilos, which isn't a bad thing in itself, but it is when you only have a day and your main destination is Nisyros.

The biggest festival is of Agios Pandelimonas - a monastery at the north end of the island. It takes place from 25 - 27 July and there is music, food and dancing. The island is very busy during this time and the bus runs quite regularly throughout the evening (you may have to beg a lift back or sleep at the monastery) - the bus journey itself is an experience.......

From the end of September/beginning of October tavernas start mysteriously shutting during the day....."Gone fishing" signs don't appear, but that's where everybody is!! Take a rod and line and catch "tsargana" (garfish) to use as bait for the "kinigos" (hunters), and see if you can catch the first of the season - a BIG deal!!!!

For those more confident of their sense of direction, head off with Baz Ward's map in hand. Excellent walking country
This picture was taken on the "round the mountain" walk starting and finishing at Livadia

There are loads of wonderful walks on Tilos - use Baz Ward's excellent map (the best map I've come across for any Greek island).
If you're not over confident on goat tracks and prefer to stick to bulldozed tracks or tarmacked roads, try the walk to the OTE (telecom) tower on the road past Mikro Horio - the views from the top are fantastic

Favorite thing: I understand that as of mid July 2004 Tilos will have its own bank branch together with ATM. Where it is located I do not know, but it means that travellers will no longer only have to rely on travel agencies to change money.....
