Portions are huge!

by Capreae

It didn't matter where we ate, every restaurant had huge portions that were meant to be shared. The Greek salad is meant for two people and the Tzatziki yogurt dip tastes different in every region. The Souvlaki is a kabob on a skewer and I didn't think it was anything special. The Donair plate is huge and meant to be shared by at least two people. Mousaka is delicious straight out of the oven and it's the equivelent of eggplant lasagna minus the pasta. Pastitsio is baked pasta in a ceramic bowl and absolutely delicious! I ate Bifteki spicy meatballs at one restaurant and the owner came out to personally thank me for ordering them. He was so impressed that I ate them, that I got some of the food on my bill for free. Actually I don't know if it is a Greek custom, but we got free Ouzu, coffee, and dessert in every restaurant we ate. The food was delicious everywhere we went and I tried a...

Bread

by Balam

One of the sweetest smelling places in a greek village is the bakery, It's one of the first things i look out for and it's certainly worth paying a visit early in the day for the freshest Koulouria (rings of white bread sprinkled with sesame seeds), Choriatiko (a flat off white and very tasty country bread). And why not purchase a few Moustalevria (wine flavoured sesame biscuits) to eat on the wak back to your lodging. At the end of the days baking the ovens are normaly made available for Neighbours to cook their Legs of lamb or other roasts so if you are staying self catering and only have one of those small hobs and no oven why not make friends with the baker and he will do your lamb to.

Desserts

by Balam

Greeks often eat their after dinner dessert at the pastry shop ( Zacharoplastio ) on the way home, Traditional tavernas rarely have a varied selection. Among the most popular are baklava ( a honey drenched flaky pastry with walnuts and almonds), loukoum (a doughnut like honey fritter), kataifi (a sort of shredded wheat filled with honey or syrup and chopped almonds), pitta me meli (honey cake), Galaktobouriko is a custard pie and don't forget the dairy shop (Galaktopolio) for the perfect sour sweet mixture of fresh yoghurt and honey.Or just some fruit, the best being peaches, apricots, grapes, melons and pomegranetes.

Gyros

by Balam

Gyros is traditionally made of pork. In recent years chicken gyros has appeared, thanks to its low fat content. Recently the doner kebab has also shown up, made of mixed lamb and beef mince. In the Greek gyros, the pita bread is not cut open to insert the meat and vegetables, That is the Cypriot pita, which has a different flavour to the traditional Greek variety. There is also the version in half a small loaf of bread with the centre removed, which is basted and grilled like pita bread. In northern Greece gyros is served with mustard or ketchup instead of yoghourt. In Athens, gyros does not include chips.Make your own:This is probably the best way of enjoying a healthier gyros with quality ingredients. Ready-made pita bread is sold in all major supermarkets and pork is readily available. Recently, special herb and spice mixtures for gyros have come on the market, although oregano, salt,...

Eat at Milton: Nice experience!

by aquatic

We asked for a copy of their menu, but waitress refused to give a copy. Obviously they think that Eat at Milton is very original and interesting place. Not for a New Yorker, though. It is not a traditional greek food place. However, everything I ate here I liked very much. I took 7 pictures of everything we ordered so you can judge at list by them. I would say, the place is nice, small, but nice and romantic. It is located in Plaka was close to my hotel Electra Palace. It is not cheap, but I guess, appropriate for Electra customers:)) We ate:Valeriana Salad with asparagus, fennel and horseredishLamb shankYogurt parfait with caramelized cake with TOMATOE marmelade (was very good and surprising)Panakotta Kahlua (also very good)Chocolate Mousse - the best I ever tried.

Gyros

by traveling_girl_13

Go anywhere in Athens and you will find hundreds of gyro/souvlaki stands and small restaurants. You may be tempted to just sit down any old place with and english menu... Don't! If they place is smart enough to make an english menu, they are smart enough to charge you for that convience. And the food tends to be second rate. I find that the best food comes from the most authentic restaurants and stands. Just look around first, listen. If they people sitting there are speaking mostly english, pass it by. Go where you hear the local language, in this case Greek. And stay away from the touristy areas, like the Plaka. Gyros are my favourite. I like the chicken version, because I am semi-vegitarian and only eat chicken and fish. Souvlaki is basically the same as a gyro, but you make it up yourself. Oh, and it is pronounced here-row (kind of).

Gorgeous seafood! Gorgeous prices! Chania, Crete

by Col21

This restaurant is on the seafront, and is packed with locals. We found it on a Sunday in October last year, many tourists had gone home, so we were getting used to being practically the only ones in restaurants - and yet this place was PACKED! We had difficulty getting a table, but my goodness, once we did it was worth it! We had stuffed courgette flowers, Stuffed vine leaves, a Cretan salad and grilled aubergines and we were stuffed! Cretan feta cheese is so much nicer than ordinary greek feta in my opinion. We went back 3 times after that time both in the evening and at lunchtime and it was always busy. Had a fresh fish platter with little fish, prawns, squid, octopus and anchovies - all FRESH. Being seafood lovers, we do unfortunately get frozen fish quite often if you're not careful, but here it was all fresh and boy, could you tell! Friendly staff, gorgeous fresh food! Courgette...

The food ranges from seafood and beef dishes to pastas and salads. While each of us probably has a different definition of "romantic," you won't go wrong when it comes to a romantic...
