Everest is a Greek fast food chain specialising in toast, sandwiches and bagels.Like Starbucks today, its presence is omnipotent as you will find branches littered all over Athens. In fact, the chain is established all around Greece and has an international presence in the Mediterranean region and the Balkans as well. [The chain is comprised of Everest Papagallino, La Pasteria and Highway stops called Olympus Plaza]And like Starbucks, you can get a quick fix for your caffeine addiction or your rumbling stomach.You'll be hard-pressed to not meet one branch while in Greece! Nothing really sticks out....just like Starbucks.I dropped in here and there to just grab coffee!

This is just funny. In Athen's,an outdoor fast food place. I asked in english for a hotdog with soft ice-cream on it. Just a spur of the moment idea. The fella did not speak a word of english and it took awhile before it got straightened out. He gave me the ice-cream for free.I remembered how to say Thank-you...sort of in Greek. 'I've Got A Stove', = Thank-you. Well,it sounds a bit like that.

Creta Sun, Xerokambos, East Crete: Authentic Cretan grub in Xerokambos nr. Zakros/Zir

With outdoor seating areas on two sides of the main road in Xerokambos, one of them under enormous scrambling vines, this is a friendly place with a good range of dishes, from ladera to more touristy offerings. Though some way from the beach, it's the place the locals go for good grub. Take the car - too far to walk from the beach in summer. Had a range while there, all of them very good. Lamb chops were superb. If you like Cretan cuisine, ask the waitress what dishes of the day they have.

Ippokambos: Authentic fish taverna

For a real Cretan fish taverna, you can't beat Ippokambos - the crowds of Cretans prepared to queue for a table after 10pm speaks volumes. Its outdoor area has moved from the cramped & unsalubrious pavement, to a seafront space very near the harbour (&still opposite the kitchen of the taverna). So much nicer now! The food is as cheap, fresh & tasty as always. A real working place, thankfully unknown by lots of tourists but justly well known in the city (Heraklion). Wonderful views of ships entering/leaving the harbour at night. Fresh fish, usually grilled. "Gopa" are good but so is everything they have here. Kalamari to die for, tender and tasty. Best to ask what they have in (it depends on the day's catch).Hard to set a per person price because it depends on what you select, but silly (low)prices anyway on an island where fresh seafood/fish is by no means cheap any more.

General: Times are a-changing...

Eating out in Greece is no longer cheap. Establishments are changing, credit cards are accepted widely and poking about the kitchen to see what's cooking now seems a thing of the past.Tavernas have now become restaurants, prices have spiralled and service is FAST. Whatever happened to demolishing a couple of bottles of wine whilst waiting for your food to be cooked? I remember watching the potatoes that were to become our chips being peeled, even making our own salads on the odd occasion. Not so now, in most places everything is ready or almost ready. The waiters in uniform RUN about like mad men. No sooner have you sat down than they are waiting to take your order. I hate being rushed and often if you don't order there and then, you are forgotten about!!Oh, and even the wine glasses are goblets!!!! and the price of the loose wine rises as steadily as the food prices.And we won't forget...

A special restaurant due to his nice and cosy shade ambiance, pleasant and stressfree athmospere, lots of plants and flowers, polite waiters;delicious appetizers...there is a kind of humid air provided by some device, to make you feel the coolness .....(a certain remark for the very clean toilet - 10 points!!)....
