    Shopping in Plaka
    by SirRichard
Unless you look for something very specific from some part of Greece, you can leave your shopping for the last day (supposing you leave by plane from Athens). Here you can find in the Plaka area many different souvenirs of Greece.

And for the last minute shopping you can do that at the airport, although prices there tend to be slightly higher. Nevertheless, there are good prices there for liquors and spirits, I always buy ouzo there, as I just carry the bottle in the airport and it goes safer in my plastic bag than in the checked-in suitcase...

    How many do you want???

This is just one of many sales lorries you see and hear visiting local villages. Greece wouldn't be Greece without the constant barrage of voices over p.a. systems, shouting their wares.
Usually the load looks totally unsafe or it's on an unsuitable vehicle for the amount of stuff being carried.
You will usually see someone sat amidst the goods for sale, whatever they are.
Most remoter villages are visited by green-grocers, fish-mongers, bakers and butchers. We love watching their arrival and the shouting and negotiating over the wares that inevitably takes place. You could be forgiven for thinking some huge argument was erupting!!

Whatever takes your fancy. These salesfolk seem to sell everything , ranging from chairs (be they wooden or plastic) to pots and pans, carpets, vegetables and of course the baker. They are a real life-line for villages out on a limb without decent transport.

According to a local tradition we stopped at an icon workshop that makes and sells icons. Here we saw how the Icons are still made in a slow, painstaking traditional way.
I’ve bought an icon with Certificate and Commitment for quality. It says that this copy is a precise copy of old Byzantine Icon on canvas with authentic angiography colors, inalterable in time. Made of pure silver 925˚, worked by traditional artisans.
    It’s free for exportation.
It cost 260€ at a discount of 40%.

A nice souvenir shop situated on the distance of 2 kilometers from the Sanctuary. Our bus has made there a half-hour stop.
While other tourists went shopping I used this time to admire gift goods which almost all in some extent connected with ancient and mythological Greece.

If I had a giant suitcase and a huge house with a plenty of rooms, cupboards, wardrobes, bookcases and shelves, I would buy much what I have seen in this shop. But as the place in a suitcase is limited, my apartment in Moscow is rather small, and shelves are filled by souvenirs from the previous trips, I have refrained from purchases.

You may watch or even only listen to the music out of my 1 min 54 sec VIDEO-Clip Epidaurus Souvenir Shop out of my YouTube channel.

The visit to the shop has begun with small cognitive excursion. A local master has shown us manufacturing techniques of a clay vase. Our guide Konstantin has very fascinatingly told us how these vases had been painted and pictured, what figures and form of a vase or a cup mean.

Some tourists tried to work with a potter's wheel and produced a vase of their own. A boy was very glad when he took his own crooked vase. I think impressions about this pottery will be remembered for a long time.

the local markets in greece are, like in most countries, very nice places.
always full of life and good bargains.
a good place to go for something cheap to eat.
