"Retsina" is the Greek name for a wine which has been flavoured with sandarac, a resin obtained from the tree Calitris quadrivalvis which grows in the Aegean Islands and N.W. Africa.
Malamatina Retsina has been a family tradition for generations. With each generation the Malamatina family have continued to refine and improve this distinctive Greek dry wine.

  • Olive oil - Greece
    Olive oil
    by miman
Olive oil is a vegetable oil obtained from the fruit of the Olive tree a traditional tree crop of the Mediterranean Basin. It is used in cooking, cosmetics, soaps and as a fuel for traditional oil lamps. Olive oil is regarded as a healthful dietary oil because of its high content of monounsaturated fat and polyphenols.
Virgin Olive Oil also comes from the first pressing without refining, but virgin olive oil may have an acidity level of up to 2%. Although its flavour intensity can vary, virgin olive oil is milder than extra virgin.
Olive Oil has an acidity level of no more than 1.5%. At the initial pressing it will be much higher than that, but the level is brought down to its legal limit by blending the refined oil with premium quality extra virgin olive oil. Milder in taste and colour, olive oil is the preferred medium for frying or for flavouring delicate foods that may be overwhelmed by the richness of extra virgin oil.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil is derived from the first cold pressing of olives without refining. Although its flavour intensity can vary, virgin olive oil is milder than extra virgin. Extra Virgin Olive Oils is judged to have a superior taste. There can be no refined oil in extra-virgin olive oil.

  • Olives - Greece
    Olives
    by miman
The Olive is the fruit of the Olive tree - small tree. Its use as a major agricultural product in preclassical Greece. Olive trees show a marked preference for calcareous soils, flourishing best on limestone slopes and crags, and coastal climate conditions. The olive's suitability for table consumption is a function of its size, which is important to presentation. Olives between 3 and 5 g are considered medium-sized, while those weighing over 5 g are large. The olive is used in different culinary disciplines: in cocktails it is an essential adjunct of the martini; in sausages, it may be used in mortadella and so on. It is commonly used in breads as well.

Not all craftwork in Greece is mass produced in factories. Hand-made creations by traditional artisans maintain a high standard and a remarkably low price. Styles in wood carving, fabrics, lace and embroidery obviously differ considerably from north to south and from the islands to mountain villages on the main land. The major cities and towns have craftwork from all over the country. It is a good idea to look at the range and price of goods there to compare with what you might find in villages like Krista or Anogia in crete (Lace and Embroidery) or Metsovo in Epirus (wood carving).
In any case, the first stop before you go out to buy anything should be the folk art museums where you will see the best of regional production. Most museums will also have excellent shops with knowledgeable assistants to advise you, though the range of goods may not be as wide as you will find in bazaars and specialist shops.

While driving around look out for roadside Karamika (pottery shops), jewlers and local produce for some great bargains.

    Oh, Giannis...
Giannis Plutarhos, very nice boy who sings nice.
Greeks are known as singing nation, so it is natural to buy their music when you are in Greece.
Two years ago Greek girls went crazy of Giannis Plutarhos (I saw it on their TV).
I also found it as a good tutorial of learning greek, at least you will know such words as kouritsaki, agapi, matakia, glukia, sagapo poli poli:)

You can't go to Greece without getting lots of worry beads for your friends and family back home. Budget for about 3-5 euro per set. Although, remember that the Greeks love to haggle.
