Central Market: fruit and nuts

by margaretvn

Actually it was while just wandering towards the Acropolis from the Omonoia Square that we accidentally found the central market. Walking past you cannot miss it because of the smell of raw meat and how busy it is. Along the street in front of the market there are many little shops or stalls selling nuts and so many types of dried fruits - colourful and much better smelling. It is worth venturing into the market though just to have a look and so get photos. We got some nougat and a bag of peanuts with a sweet seame seed coating - a nice snack for on the ferry. proces range but we bought the peanuts for 3 euros. A bigger bag and cheaper than we later saw in the tourist area whil walking to the Acropolis.

Olive oil

by miman

Olive oil is a vegetable oil obtained from the fruit of the Olive tree a traditional tree crop of the Mediterranean Basin. It is used in cooking, cosmetics, soaps and as a fuel for traditional oil lamps. Olive oil is regarded as a healthful dietary oil because of its high content of monounsaturated fat and polyphenols. Virgin Olive Oil also comes from the first pressing without refining, but virgin olive oil may have an acidity level of up to 2%. Although its flavour intensity can vary, virgin olive oil is milder than extra virgin.Olive Oil has an acidity level of no more than 1.5%. At the initial pressing it will be much higher than that, but the level is brought down to its legal limit by blending the refined oil with premium quality extra virgin olive oil. Milder in taste and colour, olive oil is the preferred medium for frying or for flavouring delicate foods that may be overwhelmed...

OLIVES

by miman

The Olive is the fruit of the Olive tree - small tree. Its use as a major agricultural product in preclassical Greece. Olive trees show a marked preference for calcareous soils, flourishing best on limestone slopes and crags, and coastal climate conditions. The olive's suitability for table consumption is a function of its size, which is important to presentation. Olives between 3 and 5 g are considered medium-sized, while those weighing over 5 g are large. The olive is used in different culinary disciplines: in cocktails it is an essential adjunct of the martini; in sausages, it may be used in mortadella and so on. It is commonly used in breads as well.

Greek FETA cheese

by miman

Feta is the most famous traditional Greek cheese, dating back to the Homeric ages. It is a white soft cheese, ripened and kept in brine for at least two months. It has been and still remains a significant part of Greek diet and its name is often connected with the Greek history and tradition.Feta is a cheese from pure ewe's milk or a mixture with up to 30% of goat's milk in the regions of Macedonia, Thrace, Epirus, Thessalia, Sterea Hellas, Peloponissos and Mitilini island. It has salty, slightly acid taste, natural white colour and pleasant organoleptic characteristics. Feta is manufactured mainly in mountainous and semi- mountainous regions of Greece where the use of any harmful substances (fertilisers, pesticides etc.) is very scarce. It is distributed to the market in barrels, in tin boxes or in the form of plastic-wrapped pieces and is consumed as table cheese, in the famous Greek...

Chairs....: Traditional Methods

by nickandchris

This is just one of many sales lorries you see and hear visiting local villages. Greece wouldn't be Greece without the constant barrage of voices over p.a. systems, shouting their wares. Usually the load looks totally unsafe or it's on an unsuitable vehicle for the amount of stuff being carried. You will usually see someone sat amidst the goods for sale, whatever they are. Most remoter villages are visited by green-grocers, fish-mongers, bakers and butchers. We love watching their arrival and the shouting and negotiating over the wares that inevitably takes place. You could be forgiven for thinking some huge argument was erupting!! Whatever takes your fancy. These salesfolk seem to sell everything , ranging from chairs (be they wooden or plastic) to pots and pans, carpets, vegetables and of course the baker. They are a real life-line for villages out on a limb without decent transport.

Any tourist shop on Aegina: The worlds best Pistachios

by Callavetta

Be sure to buy some pistachios while you are on Aegina. These are said to be the highest quality nuts in the world. The nature of the soil results in a product that is superior. We did find them hard to open though. I brought home a huge bag and everyone's fingers hurt by the time they were gone.

several shops in Thera: FINE SOUVENIRS MADE OF PRECIOUS COLOURED STONES

by robertop

As shown in the photo there are for sale different objects made up of precious stones in different colours. These works of art are quite expensive, but can represent a long-lasting souvenir from beautiful Santorin.. Shops are in great number through the narrow streets, from usual souvenirs.up tovaluable leather products and jewellery. But beware ,everything is more expensiveon Santorin. leatherware, objects of precious stones or some specific Greek jewellery, could be a good buy;would not advise buying usual souvenirs from there,as more expensive than in other parts of Greece and still mainly the usual kitsch.
