Sailing in Greece

by Igraine

We went sailing with VT last year (see the numerous meeting pages) and i have been sailing before a few years ago. I found that the sea water and air was much warmer end of august then early june. So i liked end of august/ early september best. You have several isles groups, like Cyclades, Sporades, Lefkas. Cyclades and Lefkas are for the more experienced sailors while the Sporades (close to Pireaus) are easier. Has something to do with the wind conditions and distances. A boat, rental options plenty. Or book a place on a boat with another group. It is a great experience to meet new people. There are lots of organisations leaving from Pireaus which is easy to get to these days with the new metro/tram system.

E4 Rambler Trail

by amsterdam_vallon

The E4 European Rambler Trail, which has its start in the Pyrenees, reaches Greece through Yugoslavia at the border post of Niki, north of Florina. It then winds through the whole country down to the south coast of the Peloponnese at Gytheio, making it possible for hikers to sample the full variety of the Greek landscape and outdoor life. In Greece the trail can be separated into two large sections - the northern part as far as Delphi and the southern (Peloponnese) down to Gytheio. The southern trail is considered much less difficult than the northern one and can be walked at any time of year, since the climate in the Peloponnese is so much milder. The highest altitude on the trail is the Skolio peak (2,911 m.), on Olympos. The best time to walk the E4 in Greece is from May 15 through early October. Some confusion may arise due to the presence of newly cut forest roads. Hikers should...

Biking

by MalenaN

A good way to explore the Greek island you are visiting is to rent a bike and go around. Just remember to bring a lot of water, snacks and sunprotection. It can be very hot! There can also be a lot of hills. In Poros, where I was biking, it fist went up, up and up. When I started to get tired it luckily went down.

Hosts Of The 2004 Olympic Games

by cheekymarieh

2004 is the year of the Athens Olympics. The Greeks see them as coming home to their birthplace and seem to make the most of their arrival in the city. There has been major work within the city in order to facilitate such a major event. It seems that the city is trying to make a point that the games that giving the Millenium Olympics elsewhere was a mistake. This picture shows the rapturous applause that greeted their atheletes when they returned home from the 1996 Olympics. It was also a celebration of the games to coming home! Remember that the games will take place in the height of summer so come well prepared with lots of sun cream and water.

Bay of Dexa (ITHAKA)

by SirRichard

This little beach just below the Cave of the Nymphs is a wonderful quiet place for a swimm. It's got a Blue Flag of the EC, a food stall, and clear waters. Here is where the Phaeacians disembarked and laid the sleeping Odysseus on the sand.
