Vathy, the capital by SirRichard This little island in the Ionic Sea (west of Peloponessos) is world famous for being the kingdom of Greek king Odysseus (Ulisses), a character of the Homer book "The Oddisey". After the Troy war he spent 10 years wandering lost in the Mediterranean, and at the end... hey, you better read the book, I won't tell you the end, LOL. But this island is almost worth a visit for its green landscapes, little creeks and quiet fishing villages, where you can enjoy great meals in a terrace at the harbour. There are some homeric places to be visited, like the Cave of the Nymphs and the Arethousa Fountain, but they might be attractive just if you've read the book before. There are daily ferries from Patras and Kyllini (via Kefallonia). Leave a Comment

The entrance to the Lake by SirRichard Cefalonia is a big island located in the Ionic Sea. As most of them is rather green and not packed with foreign tourists. Is visited mostly by Greeks in summer. The capital is Argostoli, Sami is the 2nd town and Fiskardo is an interesting touristic spot, in the north east coast. One of the main touristic attractions are the Mellisani Caves, near Sami. The caves have a subterranean lakes that you can visit with a boat. Part of the ceiling collapsed, so now the sun light rays illuminate it at noon. Leave a Comment

At Knosos Palace by SirRichard Creta is the largest and southernmost of the Greek Islands. Besides its beaches, Creta has a lot to offer, from the nice town of Xenia to the amazing Palace of Knossos, or the Samaria Gorges, one of the best environments in all Greece. There are frequent ferries from Athens. Reserve at least a week to know the island. Leave a Comment

The steps down the Hill by SirRichard Mistras was a byzantine town in the Peloponessos, near the ancient Sparta. It was built on a hill, all surrounded by stone walls. Nowadays you can visit the ruins, which are slowly being restored. To get there, go to Sparta and take a bus or a taxi (no more than 15 minutes). The best way to visit the ruins is to go to the upper door (the one on top of the hill) and step down the hill while you see the many buildings and monasteries. It may take you 3 or 4 hours to see all, is a really impressive place! Leave a Comment

The columns where the Colossus was... by SirRichard Rhodes is the easternmost big Greek Island. Is very close to the Turkish coast, in fact there are daily tours to Marmaris and other points of the coast. The capital has some interesting monuments, a superb castle, a charming historic center, and the place (at the harbour) where was supposed to be the famous Colossus of Rhodes! On the west coast there are some wonderful beaches of sand, some pebbles ones and a beautiful white village, Lindos, with some ruins on top. If you go inwards, you will find some delicious traditional villages up in the mountains... Leave a Comment

The cliffs by SirRichard The famous Sparta polis, ancient enemy of Athens, is now a normal Greek town with not much to see. Spartans were more a warrior people than builders or thinkers, so their only imnportant legacy was the "spartan way of life", this meaning a rude and rough way of life, perfect for these famous soldiers. If you come by bus from Kalamata, you will pass by some nice mountains. From the highest peaks, the spartans were said to throw the kids that were not adequate for their army life. Drastic they were... Leave a Comment

A lot to see by SirRichard The ruins of Delphi are probably my favourite archeological site in Greece. Not only for the ruins itself (temples, theatres, stadiums, museums) but for the envirionment. Delphi is located on top of the Parnassus mountains, in the mainland, just above the Peloponessos. It is a very nice place, all surrounded by mountains and clouds. You can go in a daytrip from Athens, though is better to sleep there and enjoy the place in the early morning, before the tourists buses from Athens arrive. Leave a Comment

 (c) Lilasel by Lilasel The artificial lake of Tauropou or Plastira, lies a few kilometers outside of Karditsa, in a plateau of unique beauty. The surrounding area is verdurous, full of oak trees, sycamores and firs. The Plastira Lake is a perfect place for vacations under the condition that the visitors show adequate respect to the environment. The tour around the lake is an amazing experience, as the main route takes you to impressive places. Leave a Comment

Located in the south of Peloponessos, this island is totally unknown for foreigners. But Elafonisos island is a fabulous spot for superb vacation. It is linked with the Peloponnesos by ferry (5 minutes). Simos (one of the country's most stunning beaches) will amaze you. A 1.5 kilometer long beach stretches below sand dunes and cedar trees... Monemvasia is one of the most spectacular sites in the Aegean and has been called the Gibraltar of Greece. It is one of the most unforgettable places I saw in Greece: the lower town (still alive...by a few inhabitants) and upper town (dead town... castle, church, incredible views and.... silence) My Monemvasia page Leave a Comment
