Akrotiri

by volopolo

The first trace of the city was discovered by French archaeologists after an eruption of the volcano in 1866. There are the ruins of Ancient Thira on a mountain between the beaches at Kamari an Perissa which are best visited at the early morning before the sun has become too hot.

Archeology

by Igraine

Performance of Ancient tragedy

by marka13

If you visit Greece in summer do not miss a performance of ancient tragedy either in Herodes Atticus odeon under Acropolis, or in epidaurus ancient theater! Performances are taken place every summer and are organized by 'Athens festival organization'. June-September in Herodium and July & August in Epidaurus (friday and saturday nights). You will not regret if you experience such a performance and you will thank me for your choice!

Museum at Delphi

by asturnut

Just above the ruins at Delphi is a medium sized museum where you pay a small fee to enter. There you will find information about the ruins below and also unrelated artifacts. I recall it takes less than two hours to go through.

Epidaurus

by asturnut

At the site of Epidaurus there are several interesting ruins. A site of religious significance, there are secular elements such as the theater as well which I found the most interesting. The theater at Epidaurus is famous for it's amazing acoustics, which is not overstated. I myself sang there and it was a very windy day and my friends could hear me all the way at the top, without amplification. It truly is an amazing place.

Mycenae

by asturnut

Mycenae is a fascinating place to spend several hours exploring the ancient ruins! The ancient ruins that currently stand are more than 3000 years old, although Mycenae was inhabited dating back to before 4000 BC. It's an incredible place to visit, like so many places in Greece... Imagine walking in the footsteps of the people of the Bible. For me such places were almost a religious pilgrimage. In my book Mycenae is a must see site in Greece.Ticketed entry- look for multiple site package deals if you do not take a tour. Hours of operation vary with season. Winter hours are from 8:30am to 3:00pm. Open every day except for Greek national and major religious holidays.

Ancient Corinth

by asturnut

Ancient Corinth was really amazing. I felt the same reverence at Corinth that I felt at Mycenae- sort of a reverential awe for something so ancient and magnificent. The site of Corinth saw it's first inhabitants more than 5000 years ago, and the age of the ruins is representative of various periods. The excavation of Corinth still continues today. The archaeological artifacts from the site are contained in the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Corinth on the same site. Admission is ticketed. Students get tickets at half price with ID.Open from 8am to 5pm daily except major holidays and closed the entire month of December.

Treasure of Atreus

by asturnut

The Treasure of Atreus is located across the street from the Mycenaen ruins and is another site not to be missed if you make the trek to Mycenae. Atreus is a tomb (I guess the entombed must have been really tall...) that dates to about 1250 BC. Because of the high visibility of this site, the treasures were long ago plundered, and all that remains is the structure itself.Open every day except Monday from 8:30am to 3:00pm.

Athens

by tini58de

Most of my trips started in Athens - and there are dozens of things to visit: the Acropolis, the Plaka, Lykavittos, Syndagma Square - well I NEVER felt boring while in Athens! One thing that made this huge city very special for me, was the fact, that I used to have friends living there - and this way you learn about a totally different Greece! For some impressions of "my" Athens, please have a look at my Athens page!.

Santorini

by solopes

If I had to elect a single island to see, Santorini would be the one. It has everything, but the walk on the volcano, the swim in thermal water, facing Thira at the edge of the cliffs, and the mules up and down to the harbour are memorable. Don't miss!
