The Ancient Agora

by traveldave

The Ancient Agora (best seen by enlarging the picture) was the main marketplace in Ancient Athens, and it became the political, administrative, commercial, and social center of the city-state. The area has some of the best-preserved temples and buildings in Athens. It is located just to the northwest of the Acropolis, and is bounded on the south by Areopagus Hill and to the west by Colonus Agoraeus Hill. What became the Ancient Agora was originally a residential area. In the sixth century B.C., the housing was razed by Peisistratus to make a marketplace that would become the center Athenian government. He improved the area by installing a drainage system and building fountains and a temple dedicated to the Olympian gods. A later ruler, Cimon, improved the agora by adding several new buildings and planting trees. In the fifth century B.C., temples dedicated to Apollo, Hephaestus, and Zeus...

The Odeon of Herodes Atticus

by traveldave

The Odeon of Herodes Atticus, an open-air amphitheater, was commissioned by Herodes Atticus, a Greek aristocrat who served as a Roman Senator during Roman rule over Greece. The amphitheater was built in memory of his late wife, Aspasia Annia Regilla, who died in 160 A.D. At the time, the rumor was that Herodes Atticus killed his wife, but that was never proven. The Odeon of Herodes Atticus was constructed in 161 A.D. as a venue for plays and concerts. The amphitheater was constructed of Pentelic marble, and featured a three-story wall behind the stage (only two stories remain today), a wooden roof over the stage, and a semicircular seating area with a capacity of 5,000 and a diameter of 1,250 feet (381 meters). In the 1950s, the stage and seating area were restored using Pantellic marble. Nowadays, the amphitheater is still used for productions of ancient Greek plays. However, it is...

The Temple of Olympian Zeus

by traveldave

The tall columns in the center (best seen by enlarging the picture) are all that remain of the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the largest temple ever built in Greece. It was constructed on the site of an earlier sanctuary dedicated to Zeus, king of the Olympian gods. The new temple was dedicated to Zeus as well, and was planned to be the greatest temple in the world. However, it would take 638 years for the new temple to be completed.Construction on the Temple of Olympian Zeus began in 520 B.C. by Hippias and Hipparchos, the sons of the Athenian tyrant Pisistratus, the builder of the sanctuary on whose site the new temple would be built. The architects charged with designing and building the project were Antimachides, Antistates, Callaeschrus, and Porinus. Their plans called for a limestone temple with Doric columns. Work on the temple ceased in 510 B.C. after Pisistratus was overthrown and...

The Plaka

by traveldave

The Plaka is a neighborhood of Athens that lies just under the northern slope of the Acropolis. It was first settled by immigrants from the Cycladic island of Anafi, so its architecture is more like that of the Greek islands than of the city. And its atmosphere is more like that of a village than a city. Dating from Greece's war of independence during the nineteenth century, the Plaka is one of the oldest sections of Athens. This is also one of the best areas in Athens to experience traditional Greek food, music, and culture.Although the Plaka contains two main streets, Kydatheneon and Adrianou, the neighborhood is characterized by steep, narrow, winding streets. Vehicle traffic has been banned from almost the entire area, although the streets can still be crowded with pedestrians, especially at night. At night the Plaka comes alive as people flock to its restaurants, cafes, tavernas and...

Mount Lycabettus

by traveldave

At 908 feet (277 meters) in height, Mount Lycabettus is the highest mountain in Athens. Legend has it that wolves once inhabited the mountain. The origin of its name probably comes from an Ancient Greek phrase that means "path of the wolves." Many people visit Mount Lycabettus for the spectacular views it offers of Athens and the mountains and sea beyond. It is especially popular in the evening as the sun sets over the city and the distant Acropolis. Visitors can reach the summit either by hiking up a path which winds through the pine trees and scrub that grow on the slopes, or by taking a funicular railway whose terminous is in the Kolonaki neighborhood. Half way up the mountain there is a cafe and restaurant with a spectacular view of the distant Acropolis. On top of the mountain is the Chapel of Saint George, which is floodlit at night, as well as an amphitheater that hosts concerts...

Hydra

by traveldave

The island of Hydra is located in the Saronic Gulf. The closest of the Greek islands to Athens, it is only about a 95-minute hydrofoil ride from Piraeus, the port of Athens. A visit here provides a good opportunity to escape the crowds and pollution of the capital, and enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle. Its name is derived from the belief that it contained the lair of the Hydra, a mythical monster with nine heads whose breath could kill a man. Two heads grew to replace each head that was cut off. In Greek mythology, the hero Heracles killed the Hydra. The island was a stronghold during the Greek war for independence against Turkey. Its harbor sheltered a fleet of 130 ships that contributed to the struggle for independence. Many celebrities have owned homes on Hydra, or stayed there for extended periods. Leonard Cohen, the song-writer and poet, lived there, and the novelist Henry Miller used...

The Parthenon

by traveldave

The Parthenon is an iconic symbol not only of Classical Greece, but of modern Greece as well. It is one of the greatest cultural monuments in the world. Many consider it the most perfect building ever built, and to many people it is the very symbol of civilization. The Parthenon, which means "Shrine of the Virgin," dominates the Acropolis, the flat-topped rock that contained many of the great public buildings of Ancient Athens. It was a temple dedicated to the Greek goddess Athena, who was the protector of Ancient Athens. A large statue of Athena, sculpted by Phidias, was the centerpiece of the temple, and was dedicated in 439 or 438 B.C. Construction of the Parthenon took place between 447 and 438 B.C. It replaced an earlier temple, called the Pre-Parthenon, which was destroyed by a Persian invasion in 480 B.C. The Parthenon is in the Doric style of architecture, and many consider it to...

Ancient Delphi is one of the most important sights in Greece.First of all this was the site of the famous oracle from Delphi, but also the sight of the pythian games which bears a lot of resembla´nce to the olympic games and the saying "the navel of the earth" comes from Delphi. You can actually see the navel of the earth at the ancient site.Apart from the site you also have a very good museum located right next to the ancient site and it is certainly well worth an excursion.

On the Acropolis:The Parthenon - The largest temple on the Acropolis, originally dedicated to the goddess of the city, Athena, later converted to a church and then a mosque. Built between 447 and 438 BCE at the height of the Classical period. Original home to what some refer to as the "Elgin Marbles", now in London's British Museum. The Temple of Athena Nike - First temple on the Acropolis to be built in the Ionic style, and one of the few exemplars of an amphiprostyle temple in all of Greece: what made it truly unique was the unit by which it was planned, which turns out to be the Egyptian foot of 300 mm. The Erectheion - Dedicated to the worship of the two principal gods of Attica, Athena and Poseidon-Erechtheus. The Propylea - The ancient monumental gateway to the Acropolis. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------On the South...
