The Ancient Agora
The Ancient Agora (best seen by enlarging the picture) was the main marketplace in Ancient Athens, and it became the political, administrative, commercial, and social center of the city-state. The area has some of the best-preserved temples and buildings in Athens. It is located just to the northwest of the Acropolis, and is bounded on the south by Areopagus Hill and to the west by Colonus Agoraeus Hill.What became the Ancient Agora was originally a residential area. In the sixth century B.C., the housing was razed by Peisistratus to make a marketplace that would become the center Athenian government. He improved the area by installing a drainage system and building fountains and a temple dedicated to the Olympian gods.
