The archaeological site of Lindos extends outside and around the Acropolis of Lindos, on the west coast of Rodos island (Dodekanisa).Other monuments of the area are some remains of the Knights Era, Byzantine churches and mansions of the 17th century AD.

The archaeological site of Paleopoli, with the remains of the Sanctum of the Great Gods where the Kabeirian mysteries were taking place and a lot of ancient buildings in the surrounding area. It is the place where the statue known as Victory of Samothraki was standing (now in the Museum of Louvre, Paris). Other interesting remains are the towers of Gattilusi (15th century AD) and the preserved settlement of Chora.

A number of monasteries built on the magnificent rocks of Meteora form a World Heritage monument of religious, cultural and natural value. The monasteries of Meteora are built on rock pinnacles of deltaic origin, rising over 400m above the Thessalian plain. Chemical analysis and work suggests that the pinnacles were created some 60 million years ago in the Tertiary period, emerging from the cone of a river or lake and further transformed by earthquakes. The pillars are of brown sandstone. The site is of geological interest with references being made to it by ancient Greek writers such as Herodotous and Strabo, as well as modern observers such as Pouqueville, Leake, Giannopoulos and Ussing. Religious life, starting in the form of hermits dwellings, can be traced to around 1,000 AD, when monks settled in this inaccessible region of sandstone peaks. 24 monasteries were built directly on the...

Mystras occupies a steep foothill on the northern slopes of Mt. Taygetos, 6km NW of Sparti. The castle on the top of the hill was founded in 1249 by the Frankish leader Guillaume (=William) II de Villehardouin. After 1262 it came under Byzantine control, and at the middle of the 14th century became the seat of the Despotate of Moreas. It was one of the first castles of Greece to be liberated in 1821. The foundation of modern Sparti marked the end of the old city's life. For many years, large-scale consolidation and restoration work has been carried out on the religious and secular monuments of the site. The conservation of the wall paintings of the churches has already been completed and the restoration of the Palaeologian Palace is almost finished. The Archaeological Museum of Mystras is housed in a restored Byzantine building and it contains collections of Byzantine sculpture,...

Mycenae, the legendary home of the Atreides dynasty, is situated upon a small hill-top on the road leading from the Argolic Gulf to Corinthos. The site was inhabited since Neolithic times but reached its peak during the Late Bronze Age (1350-1200 BC), giving its name to a civilization which spread throughout the Greek world. During that period, the acropolis was surrounded by massive "cyclopean" walls.A palace was built on the summit of the hill while towards the Argolic plain lay the wall - painted "Cult Center", the "Lion Gate" and "Grave Circle A" which contained the treasures now displayed at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. The "Lion Gate" was cleared in 1841 and in 1876 H. Schliemann started the excavations and discovered the treasures of "Grave Circle A". More tombs, "Grave Circle B", and large tholoi as well as houses were discovered outside the walls. Some kms...
