Archaeology: 05. Akrotiri at Santorini island

by StefanosS

The archaeological site of Akrotiri is one of the most important prehistoric settlements of the Aegean. The first habitation at the site dates from the Late Neolithic Age (at least the 4th millenium BC). During the Early Bronze Age a sizeable settlement was founded and in the Middle and early Late Bronze Age (ca. 20th-17th centuries BC) it was extended and gradually developed into one of the main urban centres and ports of the Aegean. The large extent of the settlement (ca. 20 hectares), the elaborate drainage system, the sophisticated multi-storeyed buildings with the magnificent wall-paintings, furniture and vessels, show its great development and prosperity. The various imported objects found in the buildings indicate that Akrotiri was in contact with Crete, the Greek Mainland, the Dodecanese, Cyprus, Syria and Egypt. The town's life came to an abrupt end in the last quarter of the...

Archaeology: 04. Veryina and Dion

by StefanosS

A real treasure of findings were revealed on the last decades of the 20th century, concerning the ancient Macedonian state. In the village of Veryina, near Veria, the royal palace and the tomb of Philippos II, father of Alexander the Great, were found, along with temples and an extended necropolis. The underground museum built to protect the Royal Tombs is a must for any visitor. Not very far from there, at Dion, at the NE foothills of Olympus mountain, the cult place of ancient Macedonians was revealed, giving us a clear picture of everyday life on that Age.

Archaeology: 03. Knossos and Phaistos on Crete isl

by StefanosS

The beginnings of Cretan history are lost in the darkness of the Neolithic Age.The Pre-Palace period (2600 - 2000 BC) was characterized by a cultural change, due to the arrival on the island of new settlers who brought the knowledge of bronze-working. There was a rapid development of all forms of art (pottery, metalwork, gold work, stone carving, seal engraving). The first great age was the Old Palace period (2000 - 1700 BC), during which huge labyrinthine palaces were built at Knossos, Phaistos, Malia and Zakros, where the power and wealth of the island were concentrated, and around them the political, social, economic and religious life of the island revolved. Around 1700 BC a great earthquake shook the island and the palaces were laid in ruins. In a very short time new palaces were built on the ruins of the old, expressing the Minoan love of nature and desire to live in a world of...

Archaeology: 02. Delphi Oracle

by StefanosS

Delphi owed its worldwide prominence to the famous oracle of the god Apollo, who foretold the future through his priestess Pythia. She responded to the questions of visitors while in a trance; her inarticulate cries were interpreted and written down by an official interpreter. These oracular responses were notoriously ambiguous, and their interpretation was often only 'deduced' after the event to which they referred. This, however, did not deter visitors from journeying to Delphi from all over the Mediterranean. Its political role expanded in the 7th century BC, when it became the seat of the Amphictyony, and individual cities began to build along the Sacred Way treasuries in which the cities' dedications to Apollo were guarded, and monuments commemorating the cities' successes. Inter-city rivalry also played out in the Pythian games at which athletes and musicians from all over the...

Archaeology: 01. The Acropolis of Athens

by StefanosS

Illustrating the civilizations, myths and religions that flourished in Greece over a period of more than 1,000 years, the Acropolis can be seen as symbolizing the idea of world heritage. The sacred Acropolis hill is the most important site of Athens. During Perikles' Golden Age, ancient Greek civilization was represented in an ideal way on this hill and some architectural masterpieces were erected on its ground. The first habitation remains on the Acropolis date from the Neolithic period. The inscriptions on the numerous and precious offerings indicate that the cult of the city's patron goddess was established as early as the Archaic period (650-450 BC). During the Classical period (450-330 BC) three important temples were erected on the substructure of earlier ones: the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, and the Temple of Nike. The Propylaea, the monumental entrance to the sacred area, was also...

Don't Miss Riding the Donkeys Up Santorini

by AusPinay

You'll be surprised how riding a donkey up the mountain in Santorini easily became the highlight of our cruise to Greece. Of course we do not discount the historical significance of its many icons like the Acropolis, Parthenon, etc..but our donkey ride once again proved that hands-on experience is always more memorable and we firmly believe it will be truly a tale to tell our grandkids. There is the option of cable cars if you are patient enough or lucky to get on real quick. AS we were pressed for time we just agreed on the suggestion of our son to try the donkey pass to the top. We didn't count on the Greek donkey owners to think we all wanted to ride their donkeys. But as we are sport enough, we were really gald we did. It was scary at first but once you start trusting the animal taking care of you, you'd settle soon enough for sure especially if you look around the immense beauty of...

Corfu, Island Paradise

by AusPinay

We took a bus tour of Corfu and found that this northernmost island in the Ionian Sea is therefore at the heart of the Mediterranean. Named by the Venetians Kerkyra, it is covered in lush vegetation, climate of which is temperate yet not too dry.Of varied terrain, rocky, sandy and broken up by the typical MEditerranean flora- bushes, olive , cypress and citrus trees! We could smell the citrus and the many colourful flowers that chareacterise the area- my favourite red geraniums and many roses of various varieties of course! We enjoyed the views and vistas from every vantage point of the Monastery we visited and saw good glimpses of the waters around it. The sapphire blue waters are awesome to watch as the waves caressthe shores along with the greenery around them! A sight to behold! The seemingly never-ending coastline is the real jewel of this island paradise that only dreams are made...

Athens, Steep with History

by AusPinay

One of the oldest cities in the world and capital of Greece,, it is understandable that Athens is popular among tourists. We came here via public bus from he port of Pyraeus and had a good idea about the loc l lifestyle. It was more than an hour's bus trip for us and we did a good amount of walking. It was lucky that the weather was gloriously sunny too!Despite the chaos of the city, we did enjoy ourselves. Lots to see there- we walked everywhere upon getting off at the city centre. You won't get lost as you would see the Parthenon from a distance. Hence, along the way I was getting sidetracked looking and buying souvenirs and other Greek stuff, so cheap and well made too! Some of the popular attractions which I would just enumerate are - the Acropolis, the Olympion (Temple of Olympian Zeus) and the Ancient Agora, where the temples of the gods Hephaestus and Apollo are also found. We...

Entering from the north

by Durfun

If you're coming from the north you must check out Meteora. Also Thessaloniki (if coming from FYROM). Mount Olympus would be brilliant. Then make your way into the Peloponnese after visiting Delphi. Delphi location is amazing, with views of the Gulf of Corinth through the mountains, and the lovely way in which the town hugs the fringes of the mountain.Argos is so different, not far from Nafplio, then off to Athens after a quick stop at Mycenae, and Loutraki (to view the Corinth Canal - quite a sight). All this is definitely manageable in 10 days. Car hire would save time (bus connections) and give more flexibility. Prices from 30 EUR/day all in.Kali tihi (good luck)

Scooter rental in Mykonos

by travellingtechie

It is the best and easiest way to get around Mykonos. The bus service is only once in an hour. Mykonos is a hilly island with many ups and downs. So if you dont want to be bogged down by the meagre public transport and the terrain then close your eyes and rent a scooter (if u r a couple) or a car (if you are more than two people) and enjoy the beauty of the island by zipping from one corner to another in no more than 15 minutes. Ask the hotel receptionist and they will have someone pick u up from the rental company. Whats more is that when u r done with the rental they will drop you to the hotel again. At least the company with which I rented did so.!
