Clock up a couple more islands

    approaching Hydra

We went on a fantastic 2 island cruise with Tolo based company Pegasus cruises. The ship Alkyonis left tolo around 9.30 am and we took a lovely trip to Hydra. The 2/3 hour on board was a nice change just sitting on deck watching various other vessels, islands and hoping to see the dolphins that are quite often spotted along this route. Arriving on Hydra we were immediately impressed by the lovely harbour and activity within, No motorised transport on Hydra so its a donkey or walk. First off the ship and seated straight off at one of the many Tavernas surrounding the harbour a quick drink for us and then we headed off to explore. We declined the offer of a donkey ride at 10 euros as we felt that the owners of said donkeys were just exploiting the no transport law on Hydra just a little too far.At 40 euros for the 4 of us it takes a bit too much out of the budget. We wandered around and headed into the village which was extemely beautiful and well kept, very traditional also. The shops and stalls were plentiful and the girls had a lovely time. We did lunch in an old taverna (delicious) and did a bit of people watching and making friends with a lovely cat (garfield) the girls named him. We made our way back to the port more shopping and back on board for the trip to Spetses. Another rest on board , the crew by the way were lovely and gave the girls special attention and answered there many questions. Arriving on Spetses we were pleased to see a lovely pebble beach as by this time it was vey hot. Straight to the kiosk this time for ice creams and then to the beach to cool down. Spetses was lovely a bit expensive but fine for a day trip. Lots of designer shops and lovely yachts in the harbour too. Finally after a wander we made our way back to the ship for the return journey. The girls by this time were tired and bored but a shout from the crew man dolphins dolphins soon woke them up. The dolphins were fantastic and rode the bow of the ship for around 3/4 of an hour. Would recommend this trip a great day out and a comfortable ship and pleasant crew.

    Short trip to Poros Island

We took a water taxi over to Poros from the town of Galatas. It was a short trip about 5 minutes and you are there. Poros was very picturesque we did not have a lot of time so it was short but would like to return one day and maybe spend a few days there. Judging by the amount of yachts etc it is a bit of a rich mans playground. I have heard it is also a traditional island and so when the yachts go elsewhere it must be lovely.

    totally amazing

Well of course we could not visit this region without a visit to this spectacular sight. It is not far to drive here from Tolon and took us less than an hour. The theatre is amazing and the situation is such that the acoustics must have been and still are spectacular. The ancient Greeks who built this must have been so clever and proud of the achievement. Built in the 4th century BC it seats 15,000 people and the view when seated of the lush landscape is indeed a part of the attraction. In the centre if all is quiet you can whisper and be heard in any part of the theatre. A fantastic day out for us and the girls.

    Small train Nafplion

    train trip

The dotto train in Nafplion is a novel way of seeing quite a bit of the town. It was not expensive and the 2 girls enjoyed it so much it was very hot for them walking around as they are not used to such lovely weather, so it was a good decision for all of us.

Nafplio is a lovely town the former capital of Greece. From Tolo you can drive here in a matter of 15 minutes it is not far. We came here twice to eat and also to have a shopping trip. The fort or bourtzi out on the water is very picturesque although we could not find time to visit. It was built in the 14th century and later in the 18th century the whole town was fortified. The heat and the girls stopped us climbing up to the palamidi fortress. The town is worth visiting and if not handicapped by two mermaids who did nothing but swim I could have had a great time exploring.

    Tolo Beach

    this is the life

The beach in tolo is lovely, the first couple of days we drove out of Tolo to nearby beaches. The beach did look very busy but when we decided to give it a try we found it was just right . It is sandy and easy for children to walk into. At the far end which we favoured is a small canteen selling drinks and snacks. All the usual amenities are there including pedalos etc. Only fault was we had to drive the girls back to hotel for a toilet!

    The beach in Tolon
    1 more image

The beach in Tolon is quite good for greek standars.
Tery often the beaches in Greece are just rocks and pebble stones, but in Tolon you have a beach with fine white sands.
It´s also a beach that is mostly frequented by locals and that gives the place a more authentic vibe.
The beach is in a bay so the vawes are rarely big which makes it good for families.

    Epidaurus theather

From Tolon it is very easy to visit a lot of great sites. The best transportation is having your own car or rent one but it can be done also by bus.
    - day trip to Epidavros is about one hour driving, you can visit the famous theater, the archaeological site and than rest at the beach few kilometer from the site.
    - Mykenes is less than one hour driving
    - Corinth is also about an hour away, the site is famous and the Canal impressive.
    - Nafplion is 10 minutes driving away and a great place to spend your evenings, good restaurant and nice sophisticated cafes on the seafront

Sunbathing and swimming at the beach

    Clear blue water

Tolon beach is one of the nicer in the area, it is big, has fine golden sand and crystal clear water. It is also very organized, there are plenty of beach umbrellas and chair rentals, boat rentals and different water sport opportunities.
During the peak season the beach can get quite crowded so better to go there early in the morning to be able to pick your favorite spot.

    Gelato!

There is not much to do in town. It's just one street with restaurants, hotels, some tourist shops and Gelato shops. The Gelato look scrumptiously delicious with the huge mounds piled high and quite a few choices of flavors.
