RHODES TOWN Even though the buildings in the old town are fascinating the tourist trappings are unbearable. Sausages on the grill type sunbeds on the beach etc.Rhodes is the main place en route to Symi, I'm sure there are nice parts of Rhodes but the bits you see going to the ferry port don't entice me to stay, I just pass through as fast as poss.

by lindrine

WE ALL GO TO THE REPS WELCOME MEETING AND FALL FOR THE EXCURSIONS THEY OFFER, BUT IF YOU LOOK AROUND AT THE LOCAL COMPANIES, THEY DO THE SAME TRIPS FOR A FRACTION OF THE COST. WE FOUND A DIFFERENCE OF 6000 DRACHMAS PER PERSON ON THE ONE TRIP ALONE.THE SAME APPLIES TO HIRING A CAR, THE REPS ALWAYS SAY THEY ARE THE BEST BUT BE PREPARED TO SHOP AROUND FOR THE BEST DEAL.

The taxi drivers in Athens are know for their scams. They will tell you 'That hotel is a ripoff, go here,it's cheaper'. Don't believe them.Make sure you know what notes you are giving them, as they will pull the old 'you gave me 5dracma note, when you should've given me 5000dracma note'

by peteyjim

On the islands there are lots of stray dogs and cats. While they aren't exactly dangerous, they are annoying when they decide you are their newest best friend, and follow you everywhere. We even had one jump up on a spare seat at our table, to join us for dinner.

by Sprig

It was so inexpensive to eat and drink in Greece. The one exception was at the Parthenon in Athens. It was so hot and the large plastic glasses of chilled lemonade looked great. We didn't ask the price and it worked out to $14. Canadian for each glass. I am not sure that everyone paid that much.

by Sprig

In Crete all along the northern coast where the cruise ships land everything is much more expensive although still very reasonable. When we traveled south although there were lots of tourists the prices for food were very low. An example of this is beautiful Bali, Crete.

by mole333

Never take suggestions from someone in the street regarding restaurants or bars. I know this sounds obvious, but in Athens you tend to be innundated with people offering to take you to their bar or restaurant. They are scams at worst and merely self-promotion at best. Guaranteed, you will not like the results if you follow their advice.

by nikolaosp

When you eat in a small restaurant always check if you got all the dishes you've ordered and whether the bill is OK. Don't eat fish if you can't understand whether is fresh or not. Be careful of taxi drivers in Athens.

Santorini (also known as...

by rhunne

Santorini (also known as Thira) is regarded by many as the most spectacular of the Greek islands. Thousands of tourists come every year to gape at the sea-filled caldera, a vestige of what was probably the world's largest volcanic eruption, ever. Santorini's caldera pales in comparison to the Cape Verde Islands. The ruins of Akrotiri are a farce, (all artifacts have been removed to the museum in Athens) dark and covered by corrugated aluminum make picture taking impossible-no flashes allowed. Santorini was nothing but disappointment. Money better spent elsewhere. Photo: Ruins of Akrotiri.

In Athens, the taxi drivers have a tendency to rip off the tourists. So when you take a cab make sure that the driver synchronize the meter and make sure that the charge you for the right amount. In addition pay attention that they give you the correct change.
