If you're on a package, the day you arrive (or at the latest, the next morning), you'll be invited to an 'orientation' session with the promise of free alcohol. Well the alcohol turns out to be a glass of orange juice, and the orientation turns out to be their attempt to sell you excursions and nights out and other trips. But beware! You can probably get exactly the same thing for half the price by going direct to a local operator. I certainly did.

The agora in Athens.The shop owners seemed to know every known language. They even greeted me in Hebrew, I spoke with a friend in English they switched to English, then when friends spoke Hungarian they switched again.We checked prices and you can find the same things in other shops not in the agora for much less, just be aware, not all shops there are 'traps', some are okay.
The red button with cord attached.You may ask what a red button has to do with a 'tourist trap', well here's the story. When we visited the city of Arta on the northwest coasts of Greece we stayed in a hotel in the center of town. After a long day we checked in and I immediately went for a good shower. As I was showering I noticed a small plastic square on the bath wall. It had a small red button in the center and when you pulled it you found that it had a string attached. I thought that it was a clothes line that you pulled and attached to the opposite wall, but when I pulled it to its full length I found that it was only about 20 cm. long. I pulled again to see if it had become stuck, no it didn't get any longer. At this time I heard the phone ring in the room and Zohara answering. Then Zohara came to the door and asked me if I was okay. I said yes, but why was she asking?? The lobby...
Watching the sunset on the caldera is 'supposedly' one of the best experiences in Santorini. Don't be fooled about it. If you try sitting in a bar on the caldera, you will only get an overpriced drink, a dose of a 'supposedly' romantic music, and a distracting effect coming from dozens of flashes all around. Try buying a couple of beers and sitting somewhere further away, why not even try Pirgos (fantastic view of the island) instead of the ultra-famous Fira or Oia?
When flying into Heraklion, Crete, especially at night, the cab drivers will try to take you to a hotel they have an under the table deal with. We went without a reservation and were subjected to this tactic but after seeing the hotels they recommended, insisted on going to one we knew was a better hotel. It took lots of insisting so have a reservation.Use the Lonely Planet guides always!
People who have been to Hydra before by boat know that the harbour is full with old anker chains and such. These Danes didn´t know or weren´t carefull enough because they got all tangled up. We had a great time watching struggle to make it free. Wish them a safe journey, they where already sailing for 5 years!!
But avoid big touristic destinations during mid-August. It is the period when most of greek (and European) towns are empty and everybody is in one island. Specially avoid well-known places like mykonos or Santorini. Best season is early July or September, with September the best. On the other hand if someone likes the crazy kind of life that a place full of people can offer (night life full of people running from bar to bar and from one club to another) then August is for you. Just go for it ;-)
Taxi drivers in Athens. Probably the worlds most dishonest and unruly. Always try and find the price of your journey BEFORE you take a taxi and refuse to pay more than 10-20% above that price (for trafic jams, etc.) I can't tell you how much I dislike these drivers!
Wen going around the island whith boat, choose one whith an English speaking guide ore you wil end whith a guide explaning ten minutes in greek then turning to you pointing and say 'English? This cave OK?'
