Renting a Reliable Car in Greece

by janetanne

I have had LOTS of experience renting cars in Athens and on the islands. I have been renting a new Fiat Panda since last September (8 months), as I do not want to own a car and I live in Greece. I am currently renting from an EXCELLENT, reliable, and very professional company called DRIVE. Their main office is in VARI, but they can deliver the car to you at the airport on your arrival. Their email address is: info@drivecarrentals.gr and their web address is www.drivecarrentals.gr Their phone number is: (30) 210- 8975637; FAX: (30) 210 8973117; Ask for Dimitri or Antonis. Please let them know that you heard about them from me and do ask for the best price they can offer. The reason I like them, is because they are very honest, polite and their cars are new and in excellent condition.Other car rentals I have used, but do not recommend are Pegasus and Axon Lease. The owners are not...

Athens Metro

by JREllison

The Athens Metro is the most user friendly system that I have found in Europe yet! There are 3 lines, Red, Blue, and Green that intersect near the city center. The trains run frequently and are fast.There are varied ticket options from a single ride ticket for 1 eur to multi-day tickets. The 24 hour unlimited ride ticket for 3 eur worked best for us.The only hang up that we found was that the metro line to the airport is still under construction.

From Athens to the Islands

by DanielF

My personal experience with Greek ferries has been rather negative. A trip between Santorini and Mykonos with Hellenic Seaways was very unpleasant, with a rather rough sea and plenty of sick people around. The Egean is no lagoon and after June strong winds are frequent.We had also booked another ferry from Mykonos to Piraeus with NEL Lines, only to find out that it had been cancelled without previous notice. That left us with no choice but to buy a plane ticket in the last minute (being just lucky there were still places available). Weeks after that, the company has not yet reimbursed the price of the ferry tickets.If I was going back to one of the islands with an airport, I would definitely fly.

public transport nightmare

by smithy65

prices are reasonable for trips although do not expect a reliable timetable.if you go to stay in haraki there are only two buses a day to rhodes town. 8.50 and 9.50 from haraki. returning from rhodes town at 3.30 that is it, no more.one bus to lindos 10.45 returning 3.00you need to hire a car to really see rhodes.taxis can be expensive. hardly any in the smaller towns and villages.you can get one from haraki but it has to come from lindos and they charge you 16 euros before you even get in it. the driver may pick up other people on the way without consulting you.you would expect this to reduce your cost as you are sharing... ha no such luck each passanger pays for their part of the journey, so beware.always confirm price first as all the taxi scams are out there.

"How to get to Meteora and Delphi"!

by INSULARIUS

I am going to disappoint you, but "train services" are not developed in Greece the way they should have been and the train network is quite "neglected"!There are no direct trains from Athens to Kalambaka!Certainly you buy a ticket train from Athens to Kalambaka, but you have to change train to the major Railway Station of Palaiofarsala, a very important junction.From there, you have to catch the next train, but I do not know anything about the frequencies, it is the regional train network!Sorry, there is no train to Delphi! It is a quite mountainous region and the next train station should be more than 50 kms away.The only way is the "interurban buses", as we call them.They are quite efficient and take you to every possible destination in Greece.The magic word is KTEL.Try: www.ktel.orgThe site of our Railways is: www.ose.grGood luck!

"Some transportation tips for Rhodes"

by INSULARIUS

Please, bear in mind the following:1)Rhodes is NOT the typical, small Greek island with 3 villages and 5 beaches!It's one of the biggest Greek islands with hundreds of villages and thousands of beaches.To cross the island from one side to the other, you will need at least three hours! And all the places you want to visit, are not on the same direction!2)Rhodes is a very COSMOPOLITAN island with thousands of luxury hotels and restaurants.That means that prices are higher than the average small Greek island and given the cost of life and the distances to travel, Rhodes is an expensive island!Prepare yourself to pay more than expected, thus bring more money with you!3)The best way-if you do not want to hire a car-is to use the local network of urban and interurban buses.It takes you everywhere and you can rely on it.But, it should be better to have your "basis" on the City of Rhodes, where...
