ATHENS - Transport to & from the airport or port

by yma123

if you need to get into athens from the port OR from the airport... take the bus... its really cheap... (i think it was 4 or 6 euro) & the buses run all the time...we caught the bus from the airport to the city (plaka area) & then we came from a ferry from santorini to athens and then took the bus at 4am in the morning to the airport... so they definitely run quite frequently & saves you some $$$$$!!!

EasyCruise

by bijo69

Now you not only have budget airlines, but also budget cruise ships! I travelled with one of them from Pireas to Mykonos, Paros, Sifnos and back in a 2-bed inner cabine. It's very basic, but has it's own small bathroom and aircon. For every service like change of towels, cleaning you have to pay extra. The ship has a café, bar, spa and yacuzzi (which is free :)).The ship usually just sails for a few hours in the morning, allowing you plenty of day and night time on the islands. Easycruise organizes excursions on all the islands, but usually you can explore most things on your own.Definitely a good way to get around if you not after luxuries!

Greek Roads

by nickandchris

It always makes us laugh when you are travelling along a reasonable bit of road when suddenly it can disappear altogether into a rutted track (we were told once that, especially through villages, if the villagers haven't paid their taxes the road is left unrepaired) or the road is still being built or improved in front of your very eyes. And the times we have had to drive over/through newly laid tarmac.......!On the other hand, narrow pot-holed roads can suddenly turn into motorway standard - there seems to be no logic. Just remember, that super new road surface can be behind you in minutes and you're back to taking it steadily as you negotiate the pot holes!!! You have been warned.

Island Hopping - The John Way!!

by johngayton

One thing that I discovered the expensive way is that if you are travelling around the Islands by ferry and other public transport then there's no point in trying to plan too far ahead - the ferries themselves have schedules and are reasonably on-time, tho' obviously sometimes run a little late depending on sea and weather. So do it the stress-free way, buy tickets at the port for each journey singly, and if you get stranded on an Island with no ferry until the following the day there's always a late bar somewhere and a few hours kip on a bench will see you through!!Unfortunately it doesn't show on this pic but in true Greek fashion most of the ferry tickets are in English but the Paros to Athens one is in Greek - yep, just to keep the element of Chaos alive!!

AIR TRANSAT

by LoriPori

When Hans and I were planning our trip to Greece, obviously the first thing that must be done is book your air transportation. We checked out many airlines and prices and the best for us was with AIR TRANSAT which is a charter airplane company. We always fly out of Toronto when we go to Europe and usually charter flights are non-stop. But this time we had to get off in Montreal and take a larger plane to Athens. Air Transat is a no-frills airline where you pay for your beer and mixed drinks but juice, water, soda and coffee/tea is complimentary. Dinners are usually bland, but filling and come with red/white wine.Seating is usually cramped, but hey the price is right!!!We landed at Hellininkon Airport which is 11 km south of Athens.

Athens - Buses from Airport

by hawkhead

The E95 bus runs from Athens airport to Syntagma Quare in Central Athens 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Depending on the time of day, the journey can take up to an hour. The fare is Euro 3. Do NOT forget to validate your ticket in the box inside the bus. You will find the bus on the right-hand side of the exit to the terminal buidling. Tickets are purchased from the booth nearby.

Airport to Athens by metro

by hawkhead

The metro is probably the best way to travel from the airport to central Athens, or Athens in general. The fare is Euros 6.00 or for two people travelling together, the fare is Euros 10. The return fare is cheaper but the ticket is only valid for 48 hours. Do NOT forget to validate your ticket at the wee box as you enter the system.Note: when returning to the airport, it is best to use the metro showing "Airport". You can use others on the same line but they only go so far, and you would just have to get off and wait for the "Airport" metro. They run about every half hour. The trip takes 45 minutes, so allow plenty of time to reach the airport.
