Getting Around Greece: Ferries!

by xuessium

OK, islands. How do you get around? Fly like Icarus? Ummm...no, the wax holding the feathers melts when you fly too close to the sun. Swim? Not too bad but ummmm....no, there are mythical creatures (like The Sirens) in Greek waters.Settle for something on water that seems to make time flies then - Ferries! (no, not fairies)There are so many companies to choose from, linking not only Greece to Greece, but Greece to the neighbouring countries as well. So many that the mind risks springing a leak. This emcompassing page should bring you to most of them, if not all: GREEK FERRIESI rely on 2 very important companies for my islands hopping. Online booking is possible with credit cards but you have to get the physical tickets from the tour agents while you are in Greece itself. Santorini to Naxos: BLUE STAR FERRIESNaxos to Athens: HELLENIC SEAWAYSThere are normal services and express services...

Getting to Greece from Singapore

by xuessium

Singapore Airlines flies directly to Athens from Singapore. As far as I know, it is the only airline that flies direct.A host of other airlines also fly into Athens from Singapore but with transit stops. In my case, I decided to fly with Gulf Air, taking advantage of its offer, flying from Singapore to Athens, transiting Bahrain. (Total journey time was about 11 hours+ including a short less than 1 hour transit time in Bahrain)My review of the flight (I tried to post this up on Skytrax to no avail, for reasons I can only sinisterly and slyly imagine):Did not lived up to its image I am regretful to comment. Yes, Gulf Air has the Sky Nanny though I still see parents preferring to take care of their child themselves. Yes, I was rather glad that the in-flight meals were rather tasty. Yes, service was alright; the stewards are generally friendlier and more chatty than the stewardesses. Flew...

Hop around Greece: FLY

by xuessium

To save time, I decide to fly from Athens to Santorini (Thira) and then hop back to Athens via ferry. The 2 main domestic airlines are:AEGEAN AIRLINESOLYMPIC AIRLINESAegean Airlines functions like a low-cost airline with e-ticketing deals and tier pricing.Review of my Aegean Airlines flight:Athens-Santorini, one way, Economy. Short 1 hour+ flight. Small plane; Jet used was AVRD RJ100. Chose to fly with Aegean because it has e-ticketing while Olympic doesn't. Comfortable leather seats which came as a big surprise. Service was extremely friendly with warm smiles on all 2 stewardesses. A drink was served and near the end of the journey, candies was distributed. Very pleasant flight.

Greek Ferries

by cckbp7

I have heard many people claim that the Greek ferry system is unreliable and never on time. I never experienced any of this while I was in Greece for two weeks in June of 2006. If anything, they were so punctual that we almost missed one or two ferries. The normal ferries are a good idea if you are only traveling a short distance and looking to save money. However, if you are going for longer than a 2 hour boat ride, take the high speed ferry, they're worth it. They usually cost twice as much as the normal ferry, but give you a very comfy seat and get you there in half the time. The only regular ferry we took had metal benches and patio chairs. The ferries are very safe; tell mom not to worry.

Hire a moped

by Jorry

Rent a moped in Kos en you can see the whole island in 1 day. It is very nice to do. We did this both weeks.Rhodos is bigger and there it is better to rent a car, if you can with open top. It is very nice to feel the wind when it is warm.

Scooters

by Magnum_P.I.

ScootersScooters - Are a great way to get around and believe me, it's no secret, they are everywhere! In my case, I rented a scooter while staying on the island of Crete. It gave me the mobility and freedom to do and see what I wanted. This was my first time on a scooter, and after being a little nervous at first, I loved it!!!

Airplane

AirplaneWe had originally planned on taking the ferry to Crete from the mainland, but high winds cancelled/postponed our ferry. So we coughed up the extra bucks and took a plane. The flight was quick and uneventful.

Every road is an dual carriageway

by Whitevanman

Greeks like to drive either too slow or too fast! So to overcome the fact that most roads are only one lane in either direction, the slower drivers tend to hog the kerb, straddling the white line closest to the roadside verge in photo, while the fast ones speed down the middle of the road. Thus turning every road into an unmarked autoroute, quite ingenious really but it must make for lots of accidents. Especially when the road narrows at bridges which it does...often and the slow cars stray back to the centre of their lane. This was the widest road we saw in Greece and probably the least used as it runs down from the Albanian border to Ioannina. Must just be a show of power to any Albanians who made it over the border.

We watched this loaded ferry leave (can't remember whether it was from Zakynthos or Kefalonia) and were glad we weren't on it! I seem to remember it was some political jaunt, it was certainly lively!!!
