Greek Car-Hire

by nickandchris

We always hire a car when on holiday in Greece. We used to book this in England with a travel agent, using such companies as Hertz, Holiday Autos etc. and thought we were getting a good deal. We began to wonder about prices and turned to the internet. Here we found the Greek company, Pangosmio, who we have dealt with twice. They are cheaper than English companies, very prompt and efficient and none of this being charged extra during siesta time (Hertz - their office hours don't cover the afternoon, ridiculously). Pangosmio simply ask you for a deposit of about 30% of the total and you settle up swiftly when you arrive in Greece. They seem to operate throughout the country and will meet you at any airport or deliver to a location, at an extra cost.

Taxis

by Callavetta

In Athens, the biggest source of our frustration were Taxi Scams. While waiting in the very long queue at the airport we were warned by a friendly local about the likelihood of getting cheated by taxi drivers. In fact, she insisted on speaking to our driver when we loaded our stuff and hopped in for a short ride to our hotel. Yet, our very first taxi experience was to be cheated. We followed the rules and felt we had been treated fairly. A short time later, when we presented the bartender at our hotel with a 5,000 drachma note, the change from the taxi driver, he told us it was Romanian money, worth about $.50 US. The Athens Info Guide has put together an excellent list of tips for preparing the traveler to deal with Athens taxi drivers; Taxi Guide I highly recommend that visitors review this prior to going to Athens. While we had only negative experiences with drivers in the city of...

Reaching Greece

by athenian80

The best way to come to Greece is by air.The new airport in Athens, offers perfect services and on the other hand the country is kind of isolated from rest Europe's road system because of the destruction that the war caused in Former Yugoslavia states. Another way is to come by boat from Italy. Prefer Superfast ferries... The bridge you see is Harilaos Trikoupis, that links Rio and Antirio towns, the Peloponese and the rest of Greece. This record breaking bridge, one of the biggest in the world, was inaugurted in 2004, a few days before the Olympic Games.

Everything you can think of

by tini58de

Everything you can think of: take a plane, the train, a boat, drive - whichever way you like, you can get there. Back in the 70s and 80s we used to take the local buses, the trains, ferries and even hitchhiked once or twice!

island hopping

by deniz666uk

probably one of the best things about island hopping is the ferries. they are still a fairly cheap way to travel around on. i cant imagine a better way to arrive. in the day time you can just laze around the decks and watch the islands passing by. nights are just as good as long as the weather isnt too bad, but on a good clear night sitting on the deck drinking coffee watching the sun come up is brilliant. only downside of the boats is when they cancel them due to bad weather and they do get cancelled in august and early september. best web site i have found for timetables and prices is ferries.gr...

By ship

by Mikebond

The most usual way to reach Elláda, except by airplane, is by ship. Since it is a paeninsula and it has plenty of islands, the transport by sea is very spread in Elláda.When I went there with my school, we took the ship from Bari (Italia) to Pátra (Elláda).

THE MULE-A MEANS OF TRANSPORT UP TO THERA

by robertop

Mules are used to bring the tourists from the shore up there across the several hundred steps to reach Thera at the cap of the extinct volcano. It is not easy for the animals to bring the tourists so many steps upward, but they seem quite accostumed to that.We did not want to make life difficult for the mules,so we decided to go by funicular, the photo enclosed was taken with a mule, but without using him for a ride. Prices are the same ,both for the mules as well as for the funicular. You can try a free ride,by foot, what I would not recommend, under such heat conditions. The best is to take a funicular and spare efforts of the kind looking mules.

Ferries out of Athens/Pireus

by Saagar

Much has been said about ferries and ship transport in the Aegean and Ionian Seas. Suffice to say that for the most part they work well and are an interesting way of getting from A to B. Upgrade to a cabin and enjoy a safe and good nights sleep as well. Upgrade to first class and enjoy privacy, too.Schedules change every so often, but check the lates on the web and get it confirmed by checking locally before you order tickets. You may also amble down to the port and buy tickets on arrival. But better come equipped with a ticket.

Serious Road Rage

by DrexelDragon

If you can dodge motorcycles, mopeds, dirt bikes, drive as fast as you can, and as if it was your first time behind the wheel - then you'll fit right in. Some of the engines in these small cars must be revvin' at like 5500 RPM and ready to blow up. I've had itty bitty cars at least 15 years old fly by me doing at least 160km/hr. Oh, and sidewalks are meant for parking cars around here, not for pedestrians.

See the country by car

by ncoutroulis

The best way to see Greece is by car. Rent one yourself, and explore. Weather it's on an island, or on the mainland, you'll have so much for freedom, and flexability if you're driving yourself. Cars are pretty cheap, about 30 euros a day, depending on when you come, and you can usually work a deal wtih the rental company, if you try. Just get a good map, before you set out, because some roads are not clearly marked. Also, if you're planning on traveling through mountainous terrain, which is a lot of Greece, spend the extra money, and get a decent car. Don't settle for the Hyundai Altos, or Fiat Seciento. They're just too small, and not powerful enough for the mountain roads. Espciall in the Peoloponessos. Go for a bigger Opel, or Seat. You'll be glad you did.
