Get an International Drivers License

by ncoutroulis

Most places in Europe don't require an international drivers license, at least for non-EU citizens, but Greece is actually one country that does. I managed to find an agency that would rent me a car without one, but it wasn't easy. If you're coming from the US, go to AAA before your trip, and get the international license. it will make things so much easier on you in Greece.

night ferry from Athens to Santorini

by jennyrebecca

I thought I would share this, because I did it. When I arrived in Athens, there weren't any ferries running because it was really windy. The only ferry running for two days was the Santorini Express which is an overnight ferry. I don't know if I would take it again, but the reward was being able to see the sun rise...

Islands

by happymom8285

When going to an island, especially like Santorini, it's a good idea to already have transportation to your accomodations already made. The ferries come in with all these passengers at the bottom of the caldera and taxis are at a premium. It's definitely worth the extra money and saves in the long run of being abandoned at the bottom of a huge hill that's hot, dusty and nothing around!

Ferries

by happymom8285

To get between islands, the best way is to use the ferry service. There are all kinds: high-speed, hydro-foil, and cruise ship! Not all islands have airports and most Greeks travel the ferries. They're clean and most are well-equipped. Some even have cabins that can be rented. Be prepared for some teeth rattling in the hydro-foils. They can hit the water pretty hard. If it gets too windy, be prepared for ferry schedules to be canceled. This happens mostly in the summer months of July and August.

Easy Jet

by freya_heaven

Flew with Easy Jet from London to Athens. Great flight at a great price £58.00 return. Bargin dont you think!!We were so broke at the end of our travels we had to spend our final night in Greece at Athens airport, Not recommended, the wooden seats were impossible to sleep on!

Rip off

by jennijeans

Do not book flights to other islands from North America. It is a big rip off. You will pay alot less in Greece. ALOT LESS!! I paid 250$ canadian for a flight from Athens to Crete and I found out it was only 60-90 euro. Boy was I ripped off!!!!

Fairies from Athens to Crete

by jennijeans

I would strongly suggest that when booking a fairie you book a room to sleep. It is around 15-20 Euro difference but it is worth it. You will be sharing your bunk with another 3 persons unless you pay more for a private. You can also request if you would like the top or bottom bunk. You can leave your stuff there with the other people you don't have to worry. Greek people are pretty trustworthy. All the fairies leave around 9 pm and arrive 5 am in the morning in Athens.

Zakynthos airport

by sjvessey

Zakynthos has it's own airport and you can get a direct flight from London (another reason I picked it - a lot of the islands can only be reached via ferry from the mainland, which takes hours and hours). You either walk or you take the bus. Buses come once an hour if you're lucky. There isn't really anyplace to go, anyway, to be honest, except for the main town if you want to do a bit of souvenir hunting.

tips on transportation in and around Athens

by carolerica

TAXIS: they are a real pain, at least for me. It never took LESS than 15 mn to find one available and who would agree to take me where I wanted to. At the end, I found a nice taxi driver who gave me his mobile and I would call him.My favorite locomotion mean was my feet !!!!Second favorite: METRO and BUSES. It takes no time to get familiar with the metro, a bit more for the buses or the trolley but people are very helpful.Metro passes: one month (carry a picture for the first time) cost 35 euros, you’ll have to go to Syntagma station to get a receipt, but you can buy your ticket from any station and then go to Syntagma, to the customer’s office. One day pass (24 hours) costs 2.90 euros. One metro ticket 0,70 euros and a bus ticket 0,40 euros.CAR RENTAL: I rented a car a couple of times from the company HOLIDAY AUTOS (33 euros per day for unlimited km, the best bargain I could find during...

motor bike

by Aurorae

The most popular mean of transportation in Greece is motor bike. In huge city like Athens for example you're stuck with a car, and motor bike can pass everywhere :) You'll see heaps of motorcycles all over Greece, they are more frequent than birds and trees! They can be rented and ideal for roaming around when you are traveling, much cheaper than rent-a-car.
