hire scooters

by smithy65

many scooters are for hire but check your insurance as any accidents are usually not covered as the tour operators do not recommend you hire these bikes. often there is no helmets and the roads are mad hot if you were to fall off. as most people who use them have no protective clothing on whatsoever you can almost certainly add serious burns on top of any other injuries you may sustain in the event of an accident.

Avoid shipwrecks!

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

The headline news on March, 13, 2008: Greek cruise ferry Giorgis has shipwrecked at the Poros Island with 280 passengers (among them 56 Russians). It was my cruise ferry in November of 2007... Fortunately everyone has been saved! This my photo and my VIDEO-Clip Greece Pireas-Poros Island cruise were shown as a headline on NTV one of the main Russian TV channels - I was surprised to watch them and very pleased that millions of Russians saw this my clip that evening Giorgis ship-wreck on Russian NTV news with my photo and video!Russian NTV channel about Giorgis with my photo and video (click to enlarge this pic and you'll see it)."PIRAEUS 14 March – All 278 passengers and 35 crew were rescued yesterday after being stranded on a grounded cruise ship off the island of Poros near Athens. The ship, the Giorgis, ran aground on a reef a few miles north of Poros. It was taking on large amounts...

Fires in Olympia

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

The area is hilly and mountainous; most of the area within Olympia is forested. In the end of August 2007 Forest fires raging across southern Greece were threatening the ancient ruins of Olympia.High temperatures and strong winds were attributed to the spread of more than 220 blazes across the country since August 24, 2007. Record temperature as high as 46 degrees Celsius (115 degrees Fahrenheit) temperature and wind helped in spreading the fire.A fire burns inside the archaeological stadium of ancient Olympia in August 26, 2007. Firefighters battled to save ancient Olympia as the worst forest fires in decades ravaged hills around the historic site.A total of 9,000 firefighters and 500 soldiers were trying to contain the fire. Over 1,800 fire engines, planes and helicopters have also been deployed to the affected areas.

BEWARE OF THE SUN

by janetanne

Have Fun in the Sun...but please remember to protect yourself while enjoying yourself in the Greek Sun. The atmosphere is not the same as it used to be. We all know this. The Ozone is thinner and the rays of the sun are stronger and more dangerous. So, if you are at the beach while in Greece, be sure to use plenty of sun lotion to protect your skin from the dangers of the sun.Even in the winter, I always wear a tinted face cream with a 50spf under my makeup. Besides protecting my skin from cancerous rays, keeping your face out of the sun also prevents getting premature wrinkles!

Drinking Age in Greece

by janetanne

Is there any practical reason why governments impose an age limit for drinking alcohol??? Yes, perhaps there is. In Greece, the official drinking age is 17, but this is seldom enforced. Drinking in Greece is not considered a 'taboo sport,' as it is in other countries. If, you are planning on coming to Greece to drink just to drink and get drunk, as many young visitors from more strict countries often do, then you must be prepared to face the personal consequences. Even though you may be overlooked by the law,.you should be thinking only of your own safety and your health. So sadly, many young and inexperienced drinkers, come to Greece and they drink too much. Hopefully, the worse they suffer is a bad hangover...but, I have been witness to far worse scenarios...several of which even ended tragically.Sorry if I sound like I am preaching, but, just use your common sense and be careful. This...

GREEK PLUMBING

by DAO

One of the few issues you will be faced with in Greece is the ‘Poo Basket’. Greek plumbing is plagued with low water pressure and bad pipes. So, you should not throw toilet paper down the toilet. Just look at the signs I have pictures of. These people are serious! You really do not want to be explaining to the landlady or hotel manager why ALL the plumbing in the building is not working and it’s your fault! The baskets have tops and are emptied daily. The staff will not be mad at you for using the basket. They will be mad if they have to clean up your mess after it overflows. You have been warned!

Mountza - evil eye

by travelthrough

The belief in the "evil eye" is widespread in the Mediterranean areas, but also in other parts of the world such as Arab countries, in Africa and Latin America. To many westerners, this may be mere superstition, yet it is important to know about this belief in Greece as well:The typical word for the "evil eye" and the gesture you do in order to protect yourself is the "mountza", in common Dimotiki. In Katharevusa language, it may still be referred to as "vaskama", although locals do not really know this term. What exactly is the "mountza"? The evil eye usually is a sign of envy detected in certain people. In order to protect yourself from this, there is a special gesture, which is shunning your face with your open right hand. If the "mountza" is strong (and this may be seen as a real severe insult), both hands are stretched out. As a tourist and foreigner, never use the "mountza" in...

Scorpions

by Andrew_W_K

Last year we stayed with friends in the Pelopponese near Porto Heli. Our friends warned us that there were scorpions in garden and to watch out. When we got to our hotel in Athens before flying back my wife was rummaging in the suitcase for something and thought she had snagged her finger on a pin or something sharp....yes, you guessed, a scorpion had got into our luggage. When we found it it was perfectly flat having been squashed into a case for a day. I turned my back on it thinking it was dead and when I turned around again it had gone!! We eventually found it under the bed and despatched it. It had reinflated itself and was perfectly fine. It was pale brown and about 2 inches long and where it stung my wife there was a thin black line down the length of her finger. She was fine but you can have a bad reaction to them so take care. Check you clothes carefully before you pack them....

Alec find some suncream/aftersun with insect repellant in and buy a citronella spray out there - as soon as you get in resort cover yourself in this stuff especially before going out in the evening ( aftersun & citronella) we did whilst there in June 05 and were ok others suffered from both mosquito bites and the black fly bite ( which results in large fluid filled sacs coming up on the skin - the locals in Rhodes burned these bites but i wouldn;t let them burn the on that got me ( on hte very last night as we were waiting to board the plane no less - i ask you
