DONKEY AND HORSE S**T !

by DAO

Greece has a lot of small, beautiful islands which have fantastically steep hills that Superman would have problems walking up. So the local old guys have lots and lots of mules (donkeys) and horses to take you up and down. Then they feed them and the trouble starts. Yes, they poo early and often and when you least expect it. Walk behind them too closely and you will have it all over your clothes – possibly as high as shoulder level. You will get it on your shoes. It is going to happen. Make sure they are good shoes. Flip-flops + Poo? Yuck! Watch where you walk – very carefully!

Who's afraid of Greece??

by Lavasi

No one should be!!It's a beautiful safe country. Greeks are friendly & decent people. They're no crimes, danger or violence. People there live in peace and enjoy everything what life has to offer. The nation is very hospitable, warm, lively and loud.If it's culture, nature, nightlife you're looking for. You'll find it in Greece and more...I don't really have a Warning or Danger tip at all.The only problem I experienced is not the Greek people it's the foreigner's who live there. They can be annoying such as Albanians or Turks (riffraff).Just ignore them.Visit Greece you won't be dissapointed it's worth it.There is no place like GREECE!!!

Small Sheets and Hard Pillows!!!

by nickandchris

Greek beds are not what we would call luxurious. Be prepared for hard matresses, small, hard pillows and sheets that never tuck in. And then after your first trip to the beach, guess what? Your bed is full of sand which you can never get rid of!!!I have heard of people who take their own pillow on holiday with them but I think that's going a bit far. No way would we have room to pack a pillow a piece!!!Kali nichta.

REMAIN VIGILANT - DON't BECOME A VICTIM

by LoriPori

Pickpocketing, purse snatching, luggage theft, muggings and other crimes against foreign visitors are on the rise. Remain vigilant and ensure personal belongings, passports and all other travel documents are secure at all times. Do not show signs of affluence. Do not walk in the Athens district of Monastiraki or Omonia or around the two railway stations of Larissa and Peloponissos after dark. Avoid secluded areas. parks and down-market bars and restaurants especially after dark. The tourist police number is 171. The emergency number for police, ambulance, fire and coast guard services is 112. This 24-hour service for visitors is available in English and French. This information is courtesy of the Greek Travel Advisory I received from my travel agent.

Acropolis only for humans!

by Backpackermoose

Do not try to go to Acropolis if you are not human! They stopped me at the gate, and said "no dolls in Acropolis"! Hrmf, I am not a doll, I am the fameous world traveller Elge the Backpackermoose! First Mum had to leave the cute little backpack that I was travelling in this day, at the cloak room. But other people were allowed in with sloppy plastic bags :-( She gave me her wallet, passport and telephone so I could keep them in my pockets, and we went back to the entrance. But no, they would not let us in. Some other humans thought it was because they thought I had swallowed a bomb or something. Like I was suicidale! But while we were waiting for our friends, Mum wanted to take a picture of me on the fence with Acropolis in the background, and then a guard came running ans said NO NO NO NO NO! Only pictures of humans on Acropolis! My mom was solidaric, and waited outside with me. A...

Strikes

by LisaJ87

Strikes are quite frequent in Athens at the moment, at least a couple a week can be expected. Although we came across quite a few we were never actually in danger but it's good to avoid getting into them if they turn violent. Bins were sometimes set alight as well as tires, but it's not exactly life risking is it! The police are normally already in the areas before the protesters reach them ready to tackle any violence so it's very controlled. It's good to keep in mind that if a strike or protest is planned major roads may be closed which stops the buses getting into the centre, as well as the cabs. Parts of the city become totally empty of cars and buses with people wandering in the street (most likely after having to alight early from their bus and making the trek into the centre!). If you're within walking distance it's obviously not a problem, but if not it's best to know the way...

DON'T FLUSH THAT TOILET PAPER!

by xuessium

Expect lots of toilet humour for this.No offence to the Greek nation and its lovely people of course but it came as a rude culture shock to travel to the "First World" continent of Europe and realise that you aren't allowed to flush your used & soiled toilet papers down the toilet. Think me with gaping mouth and really, there aren't a lot of things that would shock me as much these days!At first, I thought it was just the islands...but when the same practice applies for Athens as well, it just got a little too bizarre for me. Anyway, just a note to travelers, you are NOT to flush the toilet paper down the who-know-where. Instead, lodgings will have a pail or rubbish bin next to the toilet bowl for you to discard the er...well, you-know-what. (Just don't peek inside, that's my advice, should you want to eat later)Which kinda really make me appreciate the dear folks who have to clear that...

Not really a danger as such but for the inexperienced female traveller you may be a little surprised at their persistence and smooth talk (not everyone of course). Remember there is a difference in being friendly and getting friendly.

Zebra Crossings

by sinequanon

Zebra Crossings Exist in Greece. But! Do not make the mistake to believe that drivers will stop if you put your foot down. The best that can happen to you is find yourself in hospital. So be extra careful at zebra crossings and make sure there is no cars coming when you cross. Alternatively, if you are confident enough, step in, raise your hand and look at them with a really cross face, something I sometimes do when I ged fed up with waiting. That makes them stop!

Greek buildings....

by nickandchris

In general, Greeks build some wonderful things but on the odd occasion we have seen some interesting building works. Nick, being a civil engineer, is always noticing elements of Greek works that wouldn't be allowed to continue if it was in England. Here we have a particularly dicey looking staircase!!
