TAXI drivers

by andronikkie

I am sure this topic has been dealt before, but I am going to repeat what everybody already knows. Taxi drivers in Greece can sometimes cheat you off a lot of money. If they figure out that their passenger is a foreigner (even a Greek from another place of Greece) they will try to take advantage of it, usually by going in rounds to your destination. The best way to avoid this is: A) ask someone at your hotel, before you get a taxi, how much the taxi should charge you for the ride, so that you know when you are being cheated. Most people get cheated by the taxi that brings them from the airport to the hotel, where they are going to stay. So ask at the airport, before you get into the taxi, how much they should charge you to get to your hotel in specific. If the taxi driver asks for much more, don't give him the money and threaten to call the police. Of course prices may vary by 6 Euros...

Alcohol Bombs !

by andronikkie

When in Greece, beware of alcoholic drinks in bars. It is common knowledge but there was also a recent Media enquiry that showed that 99% of alcoholic drinks like vodka, whisky, tequila etc are fake. Which means that bar owners mix the real drinks with various substances that lower the quality but increase their profit. This is why drinks are so cheap in Greece sometimes. The results are sometimes dangerous concoctions mixed with gasoline byproducts, pure alcohol etc. Usually you just get very very bad hangovers or stomach problems. Sometimes you can be lucky and have no side-effects at all. I once got a 15 minute spell of complete blindness from a tequila drink at a very reputable Athens bar. Also I heard of someone who was unconscious for two days in the hospital, after drinking a lot at a bar in Komotini. The thing is that if something like that happens to you, then you mess up your...

Roads are bad and curvy!!

by FiestyTNgirl25

Okay, well prepare yourself for the roads on this Greek island because you are literally driving right next to 1000 ft cliffs. When it rains, the roads are particularly slick and dangerous, so be careful!! Most of the them are extremely curvy and have very sharp 180 degree turns too. We rented a Suzuki Vitari and had loads of fun maneuvering it around the island!!!

Getting to the town is an adventure in its own!

by katezr

When your ferry boat arrives at the steep coast of Santorini, you have two options to get up to the town of Thera: by bus or on the back of a donkey. Both will probably make you equally scared for your life (note: if you are afraid of heights, don't go there!), but the bus might be more so: as our loaded (with people inside and luggage on the top) bus was climbing up the steep dirt road, at every curve we had the feeling it will topple down! The donkey ride should be more exciting, in a more positive way I mean; besides, how often do you have the opportunity to ride on a donkey? And believe me, it's well worth it!

Increased rapists

by kamyar

In 2004 June, first month of my retirement, I and my wife went to Greece. It was nice in general. However, we learned from from hotel personal that an American girl was raped after being drugged at a night club. We also learned that local police did not care to investigate the situation. The hotel personal told us that such situations are increasingly reported in local media. My suggestion is that be aware of possible hostile behaviors to American tourists. We also witnessed some cases where locals (Delphi and Tselanokia) harrased several single women tourists.

Baklavas and diets

by SirRichard

If you are on a diet, don't ever visit Greek Pastry shops!!! After you enter you get trapped by those trays of delicious honey and almonds pastries like baklavas and many more.Last time I was in Greece I used to pay a daily visit to the Pastries and had my desserts in the streets, enjoying those honey delights... delights that are not particulary LIGHT! LOLP.S. U'll have to wash your sticky fingers afterwards!

Ouzo power

by SirRichard

Ouzo is a typical Greek Liquor, similar to anisette, though not so sweet. Is a great drink for apetizers, along with some olives or tzatziki. You can have it alone, with cold water or with ice.But beware of "ouzo power"!!! Is a really strong drink, though you might think is a light apetizer when drinking it cold. After 2-3 glasses you'll start seeing life from a different perspective, LOL

Tip Photo
Hellas Ferry

by Antonio25

try to avoid long trips with Hellas Ferry (the less expencive tickets ones) or you will find yourself traveling in a roof of the boat and Agean sea will kill you with very strong winds and sea seek will probable get you as well.

Tip Photo
Airconditioning

by misodiva

If you go an a cusp of the summer season, even if the guide books say they have it they may not. Also many placed asked for extra money to turn it on. We had people yelling at us, and telling us that we were not hot. We even asked when we checked in to one hotel if they had airconditioning-they said yes-the room did not. We we came back down they said yes we have it, but not until next month.

"Local" Crafts

by misodiva

When we first saw some beautiful handcrafted pottery were bought it, from the man who owned the shop. He said we had been making it since 1960's. Then we saw the same pottery everywhere. Someone said the prisoners made it for cigarette money, etc. Also I bought (and paid for) lapis beads, but after a couple of years it turned out to be paint on plastic. Inside of a beautiful hotel I bought a 18K ring. That too doesn't not appear to be such and I paid several hundred US dollars. I am not a fool, or easily taken, and after a while it seemed I could not trust anyone. I would never buy anything in Greece again that is supposedly hand crafted.
